You want me to go there right now? Arabella said in a voice that revealed her surprise at the request.

Is there a problem with that? the woman on the other side of the desk asked.

Arabella was almost open mouthed as she stared, but she shook herself out of the slight daze to answer the question.

No..., no, not at all, she said. I just didn't expect to get something so quickly.

You got fortunate, the agency representative said. A maid in the employ of Viscount Leslie suffered a family emergency and needed to travel home. That created an opening we need to fill today.

Well, I can do that, Arabella said.

Her twenty first birthday the week before got her to an age where she was eligible to join the Harper Agency and she'd hoped it would lead to a position. Her understanding was that it usually took time for one to open up, so she could barely believe that she was being offered something on her second visit to the office.

Arabella nodded her head and paid attention while she was given the details of her new employer. She got to her feet and walked across the office to the door. It would mean spending some money although it was by far the easiest way to reach her destination and had the benefit of keeping her out of the inclement weather.

The last thing she wanted was to arrive at Viscount Leslie's home soaked to the skin, so she set off for a stop that would get her the bus service she needed. When a vehicle arrived ten minutes later, she checked with the driver to ensure it would take her to the neighborhood she wanted and paid the fare when she was told it would. She managed to get a seat and felt an apprehensive joy taking hold as the journey progressed.

The drizzle had largely died away by the time she reached the correct part of town and she decided to get off. She wasn't sure quite how to get to her destination, so went in a grocery store to ask directions of the owner. Five minutes later, she turned onto the street she wanted and was amazed by the size of the properties she passed by. They were a world away from her parent's cramped, two-room home and it was her elation that came to the fore as she approached her new workplace.
