The house was completely dark when Raymond, Glory's current man of the moment, dropped her off. Not that Stacy was surprised at that. It was late, very late, or very early, she supposed, depending on how you looked at it. In any case, it was several hours past the time Cade had expected her home. She stopped for a minute as the dogs in the backyard sent up a cacophony of barking in response to the sound of Raymond's pickup backing down the drive. She half-expected a light to come on in the house and Cade to come storming out the front door demanding to know just where she had been all this time. Much to her relief , the house remained dark and silent. Creeping as quietly as possible up the steps and across the porch, she reflected that even after six months of marriage it still seemed a little strange to refer to Cade's sprawling farmhouse as home. Her own little battered trailer was long gone, sold a month before their marriage to a newlywed couple barely out of high school. She didn't regret her choices, neither marrying Cade nor choosing to move into his house rather than trying to keep her own. He'd given her the choice, and really, it had been a no-brainer. This house was in far better shape and considerably larger than her little trailer had been. Truthfully, she loved the house, just as she loved her husband, but there were moments when their whole whirlwind romance and courtship still felt incredibly unreal.

Other times, she thought, slowly opening the door as quietly and carefully as possible, the six months she had been married to Cade, and much of the year before when they had been dating, seemed like the most real of her life. Cade made her be real. He didn't buy any of the acts she had hidden behind for most of her life. Unlike anyone else she had ever met, when he set boundaries, he didn't just shake his head in amusement when she blew past them. Instead, he enforced them with all the unmovable will of a mountain. She could wheedle till the cows came home. It would likely amuse him greatly, but it was very unlikely to change his mind. Even now, there wasn't a doubt in her mind
