Chapter 1

The job I had was a decent one.  Not a great one, but a good enough one for a twenty year old gal who wanted a little freedom. 

I was a nanny to a couple of small children of an English couple who had moved to the United States from the UK a year ago or so. I had gotten the job via a service and have moved from the great state of Montana to California.

George and Edith were the parents and the two kids were Graham and Louella.     Graham was an energetic six year old and Louella was a strong willed four year old.   It was a happy little family.   George was the older of the two parents, in his mid to late fifties.   He was a nice man, but perhaps a bit stern.   Edith was about ten years younger and while she had a strong opinion on many topics she always deferred to George when it came to make real decisions.  And the kids were just typical kids.

The job was actually going fairly well, or at least so I thought.    I had been working for George and Edith for about a month and that included living in their house.  I had relocated by myself and didn’t have much in the way of belongings.   I lived in one room and was overall pretty happy.

I think they tried to make me a traditional nanny.  I had to wear a uniform of sorts at all times.    A long gray skirt and a plain gray blouse.    When I wasn’t on the clock I was allowed to dress anyway I wanted.  I usually went with blue jeans and whatever shirt I felt like.   This was a bit odd to me.  Living in the same house and in general an equal, unless I was working I suppose.  Odd, but manageable.

The work itself was easy, pretty much a forty hour a week job.  Monday thru Friday I made the kids breakfast,  helped them get ready for school.  When Louella returned from preschool  I watched and played with her and when Graham came back from school he rolled in and played too. 

After dinner I turned the kids over to the parents (who had worked all day) and then pretty much had the night to myself.     The weekends were often without the kid detail.  Sometimes I did a little bit of babysitting, but not often.  It really wasn’t in my contract. 

Overall, when I wasn’t working I could come and go as I pleased.  Although I didn’t really go to much as I didn’t know anyone. So I was essentially part of the family.

The first month passed without incident.

However, one night after the kids were in bed I was thinking about turning in for the night, Graham asked me to stay in the living room for a few minutes.  He said that he and Edith would like to talk to me.
