Elsa started directly at her boss and let the pretty smile spread across her face. It was fake, but he didn’t know that and she knew he liked seeing it. A glance down to his crotch would likely show just how much he liked her innocent smile, but on this occasion she avoided doing it.

Sure Mr. Ashdown, she said. I’d be only too happy to help.

Good girl, the older man said and patted her head.

Elsa saw the way he licked his lips and guessed he was thinking about patting something else on her cute body. Not that she was about to let a gnarly old man like him touch her. All she wanted was for him to think he could trust her with the weekly takings from his store. The four bags of gold coins were safely stashed at the back of the property.  Or at least Mr. Ashdown thought they were safely stashed and ready for him to take home.

Elsa had been waiting for the moment he let his guard slip and went to the local tavern before he went home. It appeared that today was going to be that day. She suspected he was going there to enjoy the soft, welcoming body of one of the local working girls. With him gone and the gold there for the stealing, she planned to do just that. She’d been thinking about nothing else for months. It was her chance to make a life for herself away from the orphanage she’d called home for so many years.

She knew her time there was coming to an end whether she liked it or not. A curse escaped her lips when she realized she hadn’t got the rope she needed and she quickly walked back through to the store to get it. When she returned to the bags, she tied them together to make them easier to handle and groaned when she tried to pick them up. The gold was heavy, but she could just about lift the four bags in one go.

Moving to the back door of the property, she unlocked it then inched it open. The small street outside was empty and she could see Mr. Ashdown’s horse tethered to the railing and ready to go. Elsa closed the door and leaned her forehead against it. Her heartbeat was hammering and she stood for a second in an attempt to calm down.

Don’t wait, she urged herself.

The quicker she made the move to leave the less likely it was that she would be caught. There was no doubt that Mr. Ashdown would raise the alarm when he found her and the gold missing, but she hoped to be long gone by that time and
