    DIABETES

    Diabetes is a condition characterized by the body's inability to efficiently burn up the sugars (carbohydrates) which have been consumed. This is caused by an insufficient production of insulin. You do not need to buy special foods because you are diabetic. You may eat the same foods purchased for the family. Foods that are labeled dietetic are not necessarily intended for people with diabetes. Foods that are labeled sugar-free are not necessarily low in calories. Food Exchange - Foods grouped together on a list according to similarities in food values. Measured amounts of foods within the group may be used as tradeoffs in planning meals. A single Exchange contains equal amounts of calories, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, fats and vitamins. Calorie - A unit used to express heat or energy value of food. Nutrient - Substance in food necessary for life. Protein, fats, vitamins, carbohydrates,

    minerals and water are nutrients. Carbohydrate - One of the three major energy sources of foods. Carbohydrates yield about 4 calories per gram. Fat - One of the major energy sources of food. Fat yields about 9 calories per gram. Protein - One of the three major nutrient groups in foods which contain amino acids that are essential for the life processes. Protein provides about 4 calories per gram.

    FOOD

    Controlling food has always been a very crucial for a diabetic. Food is a real treatment like medications and physical activities.  To know how to properly deal with diet can help a diabetic avoid significant changes in blood sugar and prevent  future complications (cardiovascular, renal, ophthalmic ...)

    But generally, the recommended diet for diabetics is almost identical to that recommended for most people.

    First let’s talk about fruits and vegetables. The benefits of vegetable consumption are well known today. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, they are ideal to help reduce cholesterol. They also make very little carbohydrates and are highly recommended for the control of diabetes. The ideal is to eat them raw. But if you decide to cook, do not cook them long. Steamed and accompanied by herbs, veggies retain their vitamin intake to achieve a more fragrant flavor.

    For fruits, it is therefore the same; they should be eaten more often in their natural state: raw and fresh. But you can also serve them in salads or stewed, as long as you do not add sugar. Nothing prevents you from enhancing your fruit with a little cheese or nuts which makes the taste more palatable.

    Dairy products are an essential source of calcium for the body. However we must make choices about what concerns them. First, choose skim milk rather than other forms. Then, opt for lighter options for cheese and yoghurt.

    Grains, in turn, are rich in carbohydrates but are low in fat. The more you eat whole grains, the higher the fiber content in your body is which improves the functioning of your intestinal tract and allows the slower absorption of carbohydrates and lipids. These can be considered as proteins, they contain amino acids, and essential minerals such as iron, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc.

    You can also replace meat with legumes. These have substantially the same protein intake as meat, but less fat. Obviously, cooking them in water usually makes them an ideal food for the diet of a person with diabetes. Feel free to use them in salads, soups or as an accompaniment to vegetables. Large amounts of protein, fiber, iron, potassium are provided by these legumes and they do have only a minimal amount of fat and sodium.

    Meat and poultry still have their place in our diet but they should be selected taking into account their fat intake. For example, poultry is most appropriate for its low fat content such as turkey. The duck and geese are discouraged because they are brown flesh, which is rich in fat. As for meat, it is an important source of protein, certainly, but also brimming with saturated fat and cholesterol. The best way to eat is to use the leanest cuts and cooked in minimal conditions of fat. Baking without fat would probably be ideal.

    Finally, for fish and seafood, they contain fats that are beneficial and also selenium which is a nutrient that the body does not make but which remains essential for its proper functioning. The experts are praising the benefits of fish consumption to counter heart problems. Its consumption in fact, would make the blood flow, help reduce blood cholesterol and keep blood pressure normal. Cooking it in the oven is easy and you can easily enhance its taste with garlic, herbs, ginger or lemon, which makes it a champion for diabetic food.

    CARBS

    Once you find out that you have diabetes, one of the most important things you can do is learn about diabetic cooking. A nutritious and healthy diet is important for anyone but it becomes twice as important when you have diabetes. Those with diabetes need to watch the carbohydrates that that eat because this is the type of food that will affect your blood sugar levels the most. Carbs are absorbed by the blood stream after they are broken down into sugar and this affects the amount of insulin that is released. The higher your blood sugar levels are, the more insulin will be released into your system.

    Of course, diabetics do not produce adequate amounts of insulin to deal with normal blood sugar levels so they have to be especially careful. It is important for diabetics to understand which carbs are good and which ones will be harmful to them. Simple carbohydrates are found in sugary foods and fruits and even in milk. The sugar from these carbs is quickly broken down. Complex carbs take longer to break down because there is less sugar in them and they are found in whole grain foods, beans, and some vegetables. The glucose that comes from complex carbs is released more slowly so your blood sugar levels remain constant.

    In order to control you diabetes, you need to have the proper amount of insulin. However, if you are eating too many simple carbs, the insulin that you have in your system will get used up quickly as too much needs to be released to moderate the sugar spike. You may find yourself feeling sluggish later on or when you eat again later there may not be sufficient insulin to release later in the day. If you focus on complex carbs, you will have the right amount of insulin throughout the day.

    TRIGLYCERIDES

    Many people today are concerned about their triglyceride levels. And with good reason. Elevated triglycerides have been marked as an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). But in all scramble to reduce our triglycerides many doctors have tried to say that truth is as plain as the nose on your face collectively.

    Triglycerides are a form of fat. In fact, they are the most common form of fat in our body. Our body makes triglycerides and we consume in our diet. Even if we live in culture where fat is a good thing. Triglycerides are good, mainly because they are in the form of body fat for energy. But like many other things is not necessarily better. Triglycerides are really an example of the maxim too much of a good thing. In this case, it also can contribute to serious health side effects, especially with regard to heart health. So if your triglycerides are too high you need to get them down.

    But how? How do I get them down? This issue must be first understood what causes our triglycerides to rise. There are some diseases that can raise triglyceride levels such as hypothyroidism, renal failure, liver disease, familial hypertriglyceridemia and pregnancy. And, of course, diseases often associated with drugs, which adversely affect triglycerides. These include oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, certain steroids, diuretics, beta blockers, new classes of antipsychotic drugs, cyclosporin, glucocorticoids, progesterone, retinoids and tamoxifen to name a handful.

    The factors mentioned above may result in serum triglycerides. But they are far from being the most common. For most of us our problems lie elsewhere. Diabetes is a common cause of high triglycerides. Unfortunately diabetes is a fork with two prongs. Not only will it affect triglyceride levels but diabetics are at risk of infection because of factors like high triglycerides.

    Obesity, for whatever reason, causes higher triglycerides in the blood. As our country becomes progressively heavier over the cholesterol and triglycerides, and heart damage that accompanies them, will become more frequent. For most of us triglycerides are high for a reason. The truth is as plain as the nose on the face of CD. We are what we eat. Thankfully we can use easy diabetic recipes to ensure we are eating healthily.
