A1. Health is Above-All
I am of the opinion – if wealth is gone nothing much is gone, if character is gone something is gone, but if health is gone everything is gone, and so put health above all for every creatures. This is so because a bad health prevents all pleasures of life reaching the creature.
Health may be defined as a life free from all diseases, ability to lead a normal life under one’s circumstances, capability of enjoying normal food, normal sex and normal existence in the society, and capability of performing physical and intellectual exercises. Thus, health is nt limited to one’s physique only but essentially includes mental state also. Search for a single parameter for good health ends with overall happiness.
Happiness, up to some extent, is a matter of choice in a normal humanistic society. But present circumstances in the world are not very humanistic, because commerce has taken over control of human life leaving humanistic values much behind. So even if one chooses to be happy and contented with whatever he/she has, the society all around him is all out to disturb his contentment and hence the happiness. So to remain happy, one has to be on alert continuously to safeguard his happiness. This alertness is built-in in every human’s mind which keeps on probing surrounding environment all the time and take care of the body in case of any contingency. This again put emphasis on mental health as an essential component of overall health and happiness.
For keeping a good health, one need not to do anything in particular, but to avoid particular things such as intoxication, avoidance of normal circumstantial factors such as food, clothing and climate. Leading a very normal life makes the body more adaptable to circumstances. Over-precaution in any respect degenerates body’s capability to adapt, leading to many types diseases.
Normal locally produced and seasonal foods are basic to a good health. Avoiding these is going to lead to some sickness and conversely, if such foods are suiting an individual he certainly has some sickness. Cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits are main components of human food which are available everywhere. But be careful, individually none of these is a complete food but a mix of all these is essential for good health. As I said above, commerce has overtaken human values, this is applicable to commercially produced food items also. Too much use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in a bid to produce more, is a curse to humanity and a sure cause of diseases. For this reason, a house garden becomes necessary for every family to be happy and healthy, in which at least vegetables and fruits may easily be produced using organic methods. This is particularly important from the intellectual point of view.
Awareness of Health is Essential
Life is cumbersome for all of us and we remain always engrossed in solving problems of our respective lives - ranging from health to livelihood, from social harmony to our being discontent with our circumstances. Therefore, it becomes necessary to remain closely tied to our objectives. Its first and the foremost requirement is that we keep ourselves in good health individually.
Health, although is the most important ingredient of success in achieving life's objectives, it is often ignored until an individual falls sick and becomes incapable of keep on working for the objectives. This jeopardizes our plans and disrupts our family and social lives. Therefore, paying attention to health on a regular basis becomes imperative for all of us.
Medical science, in service of health, is a vast ocean of knowledge which no individual can master. Moreover, it is always beneficial to visit a doctor for a brief hello, than visiting him/her for a medical prescription. But every individual can not afford it unless it is urgently required in a condition of sickness.
The solution lies in remaining aware of healthy living arts and sciences, through devoting some time daily to such good reads available offline as well as online. Some online resources, available free to all, are quite comprehensive providing guidelines not only on healthy living but also on treatments for specific diseases through articles written by medical specialists of respective fields.
Modern medicine has reached a very high level but simultaneously medical complications have also become difficult to understand. This requires that we remain aware not only of modern medicine but also of non-conventional medical practices prevalent in many ancient civilizations to the present day. Some online resources include such services also to keep you fit with your busy lives.
A2. What does Good Health Mean
Medical professionals would like to answer this question as 'being disease-free'. But it is neither the complete answer nor objective. To me, good health means that a person has four attributes -
Physical Health, or physically stout and active body
Intellectual Health, or Intellectually analytic, thoughtful and creative brain,
Resilience of body and brain,
Agility of body and brain
Out of these, the first two attributes work beneficially for current existence of the person while the latter two are his/her safeguards for future health. It may be argued that if the health at all the current times is ensured, there is no need for any consideration for the future. It is true, but all the whole lifetime of a person doesn't remain the same for two universally present circumstantial factors of unforeseen adversities and ageing of the person. These two factors may damage health in the future of a person in-spite of his/her current sound health. The latter two attributes of health are to take care of these possibilities in the future.
Physical Health
Physical health of a person is not a mere consideration of his/her physical appearance. There are millions of persons appearing to be hale and healthy from an outer appearance but suffering from many internal diseases and incapable of leading active lifestyles. In the modern age of fast moving vehicles, many so-called healthy persons are unable to walk a little distance for their being out of practice without a motor-vehicle. Such persons develop many other diseases in their respective bodies due to their inactive lifestyles.
An active body means good health of mind of the person for the mind residing as neural network spread all over the body and taking care of internal and external activities of the body. So, when we say 'active body', we mean active mind also of the person. Therefore, physical health includes mental health but not the intellectual health of the person. The mental health is related to activities of the body organs under control of the mind of the person, while intellectual health is related to sound functionality of the person's brain including soundness of his/her memory, analytic thinking capability, and imaginative creativity.
Intellectual Health
Final parameter of a person's intellectual health is his/her tangible creative outputs, or creation of things or thoughts not existing so far. Although every person has creative talent but most of the persons are not using or finding opportunity to use their creative talents. As a result of this non-use of talent, it vanishes in three generations through genetic modifications. Those using their creative talents improve upon it through generations.
For this reason, humanity is on the verge of dividing itself in two distinct segments of productive and creative peoples. The productive people would be good at mass producing things through their physical health, while creative people would be developing new things through their intellectual health. It may be that in future, these two classes of people be recognized as humans and super-humans, respectively. So far, medical profession has paid no attention to intellectual health of humanity for its preoccupation with physical health only.
Resilience
Resilience of a functional system is its ability to continue functioning well even under adverse situations. This concept applies equally well to organic and inorganic systems, organizations and health of individual living-beings. In case of individual health, resilience is not related to stoutness of body but to its adaptive capability to circumstantial changes.
Globalization has put a new challenge to health of a huge number of individuals required to move globally to meet their career and business aspirations. Their health needs more resilience than those staying in unitary climatic zones. Ecological damages too tend to bring about unforeseen climatic changes needing people to be tolerant to these, hence resilient health-wise.
Medical profession has not paid any attention to this health issue also, so far creating more patients to them due to failure of people's health in being adaptive to changes in circumstances which are now more common than before.
Agility
Resistance of a person's body and brain to effects of ageing is termed as his/her agility. Thus, an agile person remains equally hale and healthy throughout his/her lifetime irrespective of his/her age. This attribute of health has a higher demand now for the medical profession's success in improving longevity of people, thus creating a huge number of old sick persons in the world to be taken care for by the healthy people. Unless, people wake up fast to attain agility with or without assistance
