About this audiobook
The Player is a master in the art of torture and murder. No one had ever gotten close to capturing him until Special Agent Jess Harris targeted him with her relentless determination. Jess's actions may have cost her a job with the bureau, but the Player still wants his vengeance and he'll make Jess pay in ways she never imagined. The first victim is Jess's friend-and the killer won't stop there. With each new death, Jess becomes more certain that the only way to stop the Player is to give him what he really wants: her.
Chief of Police Dan Burnett is determined to give Jess her confidence and her life back. With an offer on the table, a position as deputy chief of a new division, can Jess risk staying in her hometown and putting those around her in more danger? Or will she walk away to protect everyone she loves-including Dan, who just may want her back in his arms? The stakes are high, and a single impulse will determine who survives the Player's final, deadly game . . .

On her last case as an FBI profiler, Jess Harris was tasked with apprehending The Player, a sadistic serial killer skilled in the arts of cruelty and torture. When the prime suspect escaped justice, Jess returned home to Alabama, but it seems that the Player has followed and chosen to take his revenge buy targeting those closest to her. Can Jess stop him before time runs out for those she loves …
The story begins immediately following the cliffhanger of the last book with Jess and Dan thrown into the search for their missing colleague. This provides a strong sense of continuity and it is easy to get back into the story and the characters.
Jess is a more appealing heroine than before perhaps due to the fact that her vulnerability in the face of the Player’s horrendous acts makes her more human and approachable.
Dan and Jess’s romance takes a back seat to the suspense, which puts this book solidly in the thriller category rather than romantic suspense. Moreover, the focus placed on Dan’s previous relationships does not endear him and puts a damper on his hero status.
The twists and turns of the plot make for exciting reading as the true identity of the villain remains open almost to the last. However, the final scenes are somewhat anti-climactic and the ending is left open obviously for future developments.
All in all, the serial killer plot is good and the romance has potential so I’ll be continuing with the series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5For a mystery/suspense fan like me this series is right up my reading alley. It is dark but not too over the edge with some strong lead characters in Jess and Dan. Which by the way I like the way that their relationship is developing. They both have issues but these make them real. Thus I am more invested in them. The serial killer is evil. The killings he conducts might not be for the weak of heart. Although there are not a lot of gory details spent on the killings. The cat and mouse game between Jess and the killer is a good one. There can only be one winner but until the end game there will be blood and bodies.

COMMENTS: Agent Jess Harris has redeemed herself by her work on the case in Birmingham, AL and is offered the position of deputy chief of a new division. It would mean working w/ Burnett. In this episode The Player -- the one that got away from her in Washington D.C. appears to be in Birmingham -- or is it a copycat. He is targeting everyone close to Jess. The stakes are even higher now that he has involved her family and friends. Really enjoying this series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jess has just been offered a job with the Birmingham PD when they discover that detective Lori Wells has been kidnapped. Jess and Dan fear that the notorious serial killer, the Player has kidnapped her in an attempt to lure Jess into his clutches. This book is really good. It is the second in the Faces of Evil series. You could read it as a stand alone although Webb refers to events that happened in the first book. Jess and Dan as well as many of the secondary characters are well defined and seem real to me. Despite their professionalism, they all come with baggage. Lori Wells was a favorite of mine in the first book and I was really concerned about her in this one. Although there is a lot of violence towards women in this book, Webb does not dwell on long, gross descriptions. Also, though there are romances blooming, there is very little sex and no long, icky descriptions either. I am not a prude, but I don't need to see the math. So if you can stand a bit of blood but are not cool with sex scenes, this series might be for you. Although as I said the romances are blooming so the action might heat up. We shall see. I will be reading the 3rd book soon.
