The Lies We Tell by Debra WebbThe Undertaker’s Daughter #2Not having read the prequel or book one in this series I do feel I might have been at a disadvantage. We know a serial killer is after her and there are secrets to be learned about the past. As I read I found out that Rowan once worked as a psychiatrist with the Nashville Police Department but left because of her inability to “see” that another psychiatrist was a serial killer. The killer is still on the lose and Rowan has gone back to Winchester to take up the family funeral business while sometimes helping out her buddy police chief Billy Brannigan. In this story there are several murders but whether or not they are related is unknown for most of the book. Two murders are solved but a few others are not. The FBI makesa an appearance, t here is a kidnapping and torture and a bone pile is found and a romance begins. We learn from a wise woman that both Rowan attracts death and that her mother did, too. Again, I did feel lost at times and felt there were some strange occurrences that were not explained. I have a feeling that the main psychiatrist serial killer may be a recurring theme in this series until he is caught and also feel other serial killers might pop up from time to time. The Lies We Tell is the first full novel in Debra Webb's Undertaker's Daughter series. Rowan DuPont has returned home to her childhood home of Winchester, Tennessee. Trained as a forensic psychologist, Rowan grew up in a family-owned funeral home. After her father's traumatic passing at the hands of a serial killer, she's taken over the funeral home, doing the job she was trained for since she was a child. But Rowan isn't destined for peace. Upon visiting the site her sister's body had been found decades before, Rowan stumbles upon the remains of a teenage girl. These are old bones, possibly there, unseen, when Raven's body was retrieved from the riverbank. Then the gaslighting starts, with someone trying to make Rowan think she's becoming forgetful. 'Gifts' show up, courtesy of the serial killer stalking Rowan. And bodies begin to collect. Can Rowan and Sheriff Brannigan catch Addington this time, or will he elude them again? What, if any, is the connection between the old bones and Raven's death? I definitely enjoyed this book more than The Undertaker's Daughter! It felt more fleshed out, and engaging. All of the story threads- Addington, the bones, Rowan's past (and her present)- held my attention and kept me trying to figure things out. I must say, I wanted to thwack Rowan for ignoring the very real danger she was in, and for thinking she was just confused about locking doors, when she did certain things, ***This book was purchased for my own pleasure, with no expectation of a review.
