About this audiobook

A DCI deals with a homicide on a boat in the Thames—and hostility from his own colleagues—in the debut of this police thriller series.

A shady London nightclub owner is found dead on his boat on the River Thames—and newly promoted DCI Alex Fleming, a man with a troubled past, is keen to prove his worth with his first murder case after joining the Major Crime Unit of Thames Valley Police.

But Bill Watson, a belligerent fellow DCI, gives Fleming a hostile reception and, as internal politics come into play, Fleming finds himself up against both a difficult case and his own colleagues. During the course of the investigation, Fleming and his sergeant identify five suspects. Now they need to eliminate them one by one—or figure out whether they should be looking somewhere else entirely—in this first book in an electrifying new crime series.

Editor's Note

Not clear-cut…

Detective chief inspector Alex Fleming is thrust into his first murder investigation after a man is found dead aboard a boat on the Thames. Between five suspects, obstructive colleagues, and Flemings’ own demons, the case is far from clear-cut. This police procedural draws you in and makes you anxious to read the second in the “DCI Alex Fleming” series, “The Last Man.”

Robert McNeil

Robert McNeil grew up in Hawick in the Scottish Borders. He worked briefly for Pringle of Scotland before joining the Royal Air Force, serving at home and in the Persian Gulf. He subsequently had brief spells working for a local authority and as a sales representative before embarking on a thirty-three-year career with the Home Office. The last sixteen years were spent in the Home Office headquarters Commercial Directorate in Westminster where he advised on procurement and the commercial aspects of business cases for multi-million-pound contracts. Robert had a lifelong ambition to write a novel and finally achieved this when he retired from the Home Office where he developed the idea for his debut book, The Janus File, a political, spy thriller available on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. He loves a good crime, whodunit novel and hopes that his debut crime novel, The Fifth Suspect, will be the first of many. When not writing, Robert spends his time gardening, reading, and playing golf. He is married and now lives in Shropshire.

Good storyline and suspense unraveling. The narrator’s voice did characters well but the inflections when reading were hard to follow.

Can't rate it fairly because I couldn't finish it.. the narration wasn't my cup of tea and neither was the main character. Even though I like mystery, this one is just not my cuppa tea

The storyline sounded interesting. But stopped listening due to the language. Really shouldn't be listed in christian fiction.

A good story narrated by a great narrator - the voice genius Anthony Ferguson.

A bit clinically written. Is it really necessary to repeat the exact words of cautioning the criminal every time? The bad guy is unrelentingly bad, the good guy completely misunderstood and in maverick fashion constantly getting into trouble with the boss although there is little depth to the character to understand why he’s like this. In other words all the characters are unrelentingly 2 dimensional. Me McNeil has grabbed a bunch of cliched characters and situations and meticulously stitched them together.

I did enjoy this book, typical British cop stuff with a few twists but mostly predictable. Having said that I found myself liking the characters and feel I would like to get to know them more..on the down side, I am Welsh, and the narrators Welsh accent was awful just another version of Scottish. Other than that he wasn't bad. All in all worth a listen

I couldn’t make it through chapter one because of the awful narration. It was robotic and whatever accident they were trying to pull off was all over the place — very off putting.

I liked the story, but would have enjoyed it so much more with a better narrator. Ferguson did good accents, although I can’t attest to their accuracy! The narrator’s job is to bring the story and its characters to life! But his delivery was flat; there was no imagination in it. As a result, the characters are wooden.
I’d definitely listen to more in this series if there was a narrator who cared – and made me care – about the characters.

Narrator’s faux accents were dreadful. Story was OK but complicated, maybe if the narrator’s accents didnt make everyone sound the same the characters would have stood out more but with so many characters it was hard to keep track of who was who.

The writing was somewhat poor and repetitive and the narration was too much a monotone. The story was pretty good, but seriously whoever edited this writer’s book just couldn’t really be ars**d.

Couldn’t get past the overdone narration enough to get into the story, and didn’t want to tolerate it for hours more. Didn’t finish.
