About this audiobook

The Deacon of an English Midlands village turns to sleuthing when a killer leaves a victim behind her husband’s pharmacy in this cozy mystery.

As a Deacon at St. Lawrence parish Katerina Rowe enjoys a quiet life in the village of Eyam. But everything changes when she discovers the body of a man and a badly beaten woman in the alleyway behind her husband’s pharmacy. Kat is immediately drawn to Beth, the young woman she saved. But in order to keep her safe, Kat finds herself embroiled in a baffling mystery.

When Beth’s house is set on fire, Kat offers the young woman sanctuary in her home. Soon the pair begin investigating the murder, with some help from Beth’s feisty grandmother, Doris. Neither the police, nor Kat’s husband, want Kat and Beth looking into their affairs. But as they keep digging, the pair of sleuths discover what kind of nightmares reside in their sleepy village . . .

Editor's Note

Endearing and intriguing…

Kat, a deacon in the sleepy village of Eyam, discovers a dead man and a near-dead woman named Beth. Kat, Beth, and Beth’s nan team up to find out who is responsible for the attack, putting themselves in danger during their escapades. The first book in Waller’s “Kat and Mouse” mystery series is as endearing as it is intriguing, with three lovable protagonists adding fresh personality to a classic whodunit plot.

One happy lady for listening to this book thanks to the Author

The book started off well with some interesting characters. As it progressed, became more and more unbelievable. I gave up on it 9 chapters from the end. I didn’t care about the characters enough to learn what happened to them.

Other than a handful or less of evil-character-likely (but regrettable) F words a D or two, and a couple of mildly suggestive circumstances, I LOVED this first cozy mystery of the series!!! Solid five stars without those issues!

The Narration was outstandingly spot-on, without a single wobble, spoken with a beautiful British accent by the highly skilled reader, whom I can't wait to listen to again; and the storyline, though intentionally predictable in part, kept me glued to my earphones, and held on and gripped me thoroughly, surprising me, in just the right places!

    Jolly good!!

I can't recommend it to a good number of friends or my elderly parents, (who would otherwise absolutely adore it), and that fact makes me very sad. It's a horrible shame, in my humble opinion, that authors (or publishers?), or whichever other powers that be, feel it necessary to use language that just isn't needed and would never be missed. There are plenty of other ways to express the ugliness that needs to be portrayed without using the ugly, offensive, (to many who love the King's English), words themselves. However, there were truly only a handful (I think), and it could be argued, by those not put off, that they were appropriate.

At any rate - I will grimace a few times I'm guessing, but forgive, to see what else Kat and Mouse, (and feisty grandmother Doris), will be met with next (in a few minutes)! I hope the swearing and other offensive issues will be kept to the barest minimum, because I think I'm already falling in love with those three!

Exactly my cup of tea! Has all the ingredients I like for a cozy murder mystery, nostalgia for England and memories of growing up with strong women, tea and cakes solving problems around the kitchen table. Loved the narration!

Not my cup of tea. The lead characters are irritating (at best).

Definitely a great story told by a great Storey.... Claire Storey did a wonderful job narrating the characters and Anita Waller's story is quite a bit of fun, with the plot thickening at every turn. It takes short bit to set the stage, and then more time to set out all of the pieces, but once it gets rolling, it's a super well told with excellent twists and turns.

I Loved it! Heartwarming, interesting, mysterious, and with a little romance all rolled into this wonderfully written book. Well worth sharing and look forward to finding more from this author and narrator.

This book is a gem, and I'm so glad to know that it's only the debut novel of what promises to be a fantastic series.

If you're a stickler for police procedures, this may not be to your taste, but if you enjoy cozy mysteries, unexpected friendships, snarky, strong willed female characters, then this will hit the spot like a good cup of tea.

The narrator did a great performance, and I look forward to listening to the rest of this series in audiobook format, with her again.

This isn’t a cozy. It has graphic violence. I also love serial killer books, but when I want a non-violent, gory free nice cozy mystery, that’s exactly what I want.

I didn’t enjoy this book. I read until the end to see what happened but it was tough. Really nice senior police officers who weren’t even
slightly worldly ran the official side and a cute rag tag team unofficially followed clues to the solution. It was a formula: Katrina who also goes by Kat and another whose nickname is Mouse. Kat-and Mouse. Is it a series? Of course.

It’s a “cozy, “ I suppose but please, on what planet does a young woman see a man have his head shot off, is shot herself, is kicked in the head, in a coma. . . After waking up finds a number of her friends murdered (and more!) and seems to suffer no more than five minutes of grief, no recuperation time, and be a wisecracking bundle of joy?!

Read this to kill time before the book that I want to listen to become available during the next billing cycle. There is a reason this n book is “free”. A deacon in her mid-thirties during the mid-20-teens, who is totally unaware that her husband of 4 years is a drug dealer and can’t even do a simple search on the internet… I find it hard to believe that someone with that mental capacity could be able to solve any crime… only managed a couple of chapters.

Maybe people who ‘devote their lives to god’ have something I don’t…an apparent lack of connection to the people in their lives: flat mates burnt to death? Give me a day and I’ll be sort out my insurance, won’t bother their relatives, or mention them again. Two children blown up be a car bomb? Oh , good! Nan is fine, too bad about the damage to the car, thank goodness the grieving family is gone and the tarmac is repaired. My husband is a serial killer drug lord (and the only black person in the book)? I’ll confront him at home, not tell the police and then let him escape. After all, he is really good looking and great in bed.

That narrator should stick to children’s books with her folksy nauseatingly sweet chirp. Couldn’t stomach that.

    Lazy writing, don’t bother.
The author has made it very clear she’s never spoken to a sex worker in her life and has nothing against using stereotypes in her writing.
The only reason I gave it 2 stars is that it was well read.

Really should I take this book seriously bodies piling up all around three giggly grinning women, so much is wrong with this book the story is ridiculous, the characters are over the top and unbelievable the deacon freely lies so many bad languages I just wanted it to end I gave 2 stars because the detectives did their jobs the narrator was not bad

Light mystery. Entertaining but for regular readers/listeners of mystery it was quite predictable. Continued listening because despite obvious clues bc, it was not boring.
