About this audiobook

When 28-year-old Agnes Blythe, the contented bifocals-wearing half of an academic power couple, is jilted by her professor boyfriend for the town Pilates instructor, her future is suddenly less than certain. So when her glamorous, eccentric Great Aunt Effie arrives in town and offers a job helping to salvage the condemned Stagecoach Inn, what does Agnes have to lose? But work at the inn has barely begun when the unlikely duo find the body of manipulative Kathleen Todd, with whom Agnes and Effie both have recently had words. Words strong enough to land them at the top of the suspect list.
The pair have clearly been framed, but no one else seems interested in finding the real murderer and Agnes and Effie's sleuthing expertise is not exactly slick. Nevertheless, they're soon investigating a suspect list with laundry dirtier than a middle school soccer team's and navigating threats, car chases, shotgun blasts, and awkward strolls down memory lane.
In Bad Housekeeping, the first novel in the Agnes & Effie cozy mystery series by Maia Chance, danger mounts, deadlines loom, ancient knob-and-tube wiring is explored, and the ladies learn a thing or two about the awful, wonderful mistake that is going back home.

Editor's Note

Dark and lighthearted…

Agnes agrees to help her quirky great-aunt Effie redo the old Stagecoach Inn. It’s the perfect distraction from her recent breakup, after all. But what should be a straightforward project gets a lot messier when Agness and Effie discover a body — and become the top suspects. This first novel in Chance’s “Agnes & Effie” murder mystery series strikes the right balance between dark and lighthearted, funny and thrilling.

This book was cute. I really liked the snarky inner thoughts of the narrator who was the introverted main character. Aunt Effie is someone who I would really like in my family!

Super fun. Well written. Awesome sarcastic tone of voice, first person narration by main character. (As a writer, I know how hard it is to pull that off!) I really really enjoyed this and look forward to the next one.

An enjoyable read! a mix of twists & turns, refreshing humour, romance and likable characters! Agnes's character reminds me a lot of Jennifer Aniston in some of her movies (Agnes is slightly more nerdy though! :) the murderer became quite predictable at some point, but story still enjoyable. Narrator was fantastic! she creates perfect tones and accents for each character without over doing it, well done!

This was a light funny read. I enjoyed it. It wasn't serious like a dugoni or a methos, but it was still a murder mystery, and I actually laughed a few times throughout. Especially when she talks about a rascal scooter LOL. It's a nice break from a more serious and deadly murder mystery. I don't think anyone would regret this read.

Perfect marriage of a creative, humorous, well/written plot to an extremely talented narrator. I will be looking for more audiobook collaborations with these talented ladies.

Main character starts off as a sulky twenty something, but you find out why during the book. Great fun.

Perfect match of MC and narrator; I don’t know when I’ve encountered better. Different story, however, when I came to her enactment of some of the other characters- there is nothing sexy or manly about her Otis, for instance, and I have to say that Aunt Effie sounds rather like a cartoon ostrich/emu. And I would ask the author, as she (hopefully!) pens more Agnes mysteries, please NOT to add any characters requiring foreign accents- the French?man in this title was made positively unbearable- ziss, zem, zzat, etc.
But the voicing of MC Agnes was spot on- anxious to hear more!
