About this audiobook

In the seaside city of San Marco, Florida, Lise Norwood spends her days serving papers and her nights spying on cheating spouses. But before she became a PI, she was an art major at San Marco University. So when the local police ask her to consult on a murder case in which the victim was posed to resemble a classic Greek sculpture, Lise dusts off her art history degree and joins the task force.
As the artistic madman known as Michelangelo continues to copy more works of art, Lise starts her own investigation into the gruesome killings. When she gets too far, she’s fired from the case.
Being told to step back only spurs her to dig deeper. Her inquiries take an ugly and personal turn when Michelangelo threatens to make her his next bloody masterpiece. And the key to the case might be a stolen piece of artwork very few know exists.

Editor's Note

Quick-witted…

Lise, a PI with an art history degree, sets to work on a case that seems destined for her: Serial murders in which the victims are modeled after classic Greek sculptures. The more Lise investigates “Michaelangelo” — the killer — the closer she gets to becoming the next victim. Intelligent, quick-witted, and thrilling (the plot and the protagonist), this book is the first in what will become the “Lise Norwood” series by Nance.

An average mystery. If you aren't a fan of gory details this isn't for you. Figured out the killer almost immediately, but kept my interest well enough to finish the story and see if I was right!

This book is so fast moving. You have many twists and turns as you do in mysteries, but it keeps you on edge and wanting more. You won't figure out who the killer is until the end, and I have to say I was surprised. You don't want to miss this book.

Predictable ending but the story makes it worth it. Recommend

Well written, twisty and interesting setting with the fine art works in play. I guessed the villain pretty early on, but there were a lot of twists and adventure getting to the big reveal, so I didn’t mind at all that I knew. Would definitely listen to the next installment in this series when it becomes available.

Loved the main character’s personality. Smart and funny. I did figure it out but not til later in the book than normal. Editing could have been tighter-one sequence they head to his house, but the next morning it was like she was at hers. But, all in all, a pretty good listen!

The stories were good but the voices don’t fit the characters at all, really distracting.

Great plot line and storytelling. I had to slow down the narration to .8 though. She had a bit of a chipmunk voice which sounded perfect when slowed, a bit grating at normal speed. She had great technique tho.

Really, really enjoyed this story - a nice surprise! Now? I’m looking to see if there’s another in a series. Narrator did a good job, as well.

Interesting book with a different focus than a lot of serial killer murder mysteries. Likeable PI without the hard nosed detective that you see in other novels.

Masterful suspense. A bit distracting though is that San Marco, where this story is set, is in real life a neighborhood in Jacksonville.

Engaging story line with twists and turns as suspicion falls on different characters. The protagonist's actions tend toward unethical in some instances, to illogical in others. She needs to present a more consistent sense of herself without so much explaining. The feel of the writing is laudably non-sexist without lecturing.
The narrator could have better familiarized herself with the work before recording. Mispronunciations and weird accents detract from the flow of the reading. As with many female readers, male characters' voices are given odd intonations and snarly voices to distinguish them, rather than pitch and modulation changes.
I'll look forward to the book in which Lise solves her cousin's murder!

If you like bad Lifetime movies, you’ll love this book. The world is full of truly amazing books; don’t waste your time on this unoriginal, re- hashed fodder. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because it’s not a bodice ripper.

The so called heroine was odious and too self important. The plot was obvious and I wished she was killed rather than the characters who tried to keep her alive. Why?

This was a very enjoyable listen. It had a great cast of characters and it kept me entertained all the way through. I actually called the killer correctly, quite early on. I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author.

It was predictable as less than half way into the novel, I predicted 2 characters to be of person on interest. 4 Chapters later, I guessed the culprit correctly as some of the circumstances were too specific and I think the author struggled with the culprit identity. The murder crime scenes were clever and quite original, but they helped narrow the list of Suspects. I would have preferred for the author not to identify the killer and extended the series into a trilogy for example so as to expand the list with the arrival of FBI ( who had no meaningful contribution in this novel ). It will surely be better.

I enjoyed thinking alongside Lise, as she tried to figure out the identity of the serial killer. Though there were a bunch of red herrings thrown in, I was able to guess who it was quite early. But, I still enjoyed the ride along.

A good read! I liked the way the author converged 2 different mysteries into one and paid attention to details without missing out minor details. The book could have ended differently, considering that Michelangelo was a psychopathic serial killer, convincing him to take his own life is far from reality. However, I did find the book fast paced and would recommend this book for a quick read.

What I liked: The author's writing style was good, with no typos or grammatical errors to distract. I eventually liked the main character, though she started out to be a bit clueless and boundary-challenged. The two main story-lines had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing. In fact, I guessed who the killer was at about 12% and was quite certain of it throughout most of the book, only to find out that I was wrong! What I didn't like: It was pretty heavy on the romance angle, especially at the start, though it seemed that the author was able to get into the swing of the story as it progressed and this became less of an issue. I thought that Lise had awful boundaries and there's no way that the police would have allowed her to continue to consult on this case in real life. It has some violently graphic scenes, as well as some insights into the mind of the twisted killer, that didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book, but if blood and gore aren't your thing, you may want to pass on it. I'll give this four stars, which reflects a better-than-average story that was told well, but less one star for the rough start and a few cases where I felt the credibility was a bit stretched. Despite the shortcomings, I would gladly read another book by this author and recommend this book to those who enjoy books of this thriller/serial-killer genre. Disclosure: I was provided with a free copy of this Early Reviewer book in exchange for writing an unbiased review. I have never met or corresponded with the author.
