Annie Fitch, a former police detective, struggles to make ends meet as a private investigator in the sleepy town of Leesburg, Virginia. On partial disability because of gunshot injuries, she’s relegated to doing surveillance gigs and background checks. But things are looking up, since her on-again, off-again relationship is back on and might stay that way. When Annie is hired by Laura Carlton to follow her husband to get evidence of cheating, Annie is certain the case won’t take long. Nick Carlton grew up with money and privilege and has a sex addiction dating back to his high school days. But things go sideways when Annie finds her target dead in an alley just a few blocks from her own home. Working with her former partner, Gunnar Jansson, Annie digs deeper into Carlton’s background, slowly excavating his past to reveal the multiple suspects and motives. The list includes his many lunch-hour-tryst partners, a local shop owner, and his business partner, among others. Layer by layer, Annie uncovers a truth that runs much deeper than anyone expected.

Family secrets begin to unravel, echoing over two hundred years of heartache and violence.
Marie Flanigan
Marie Flanigan grew up all over the Commonwealth of Virginia as the youngest of three girls. Star Wars and comic books dominated her youth. She has a couple of degrees from George Mason University and is a licensed Private Investigator. Over the years, she’s been a disc jockey, a web developer, and a children’s librarian. An avid gamer, she reviews video games for GameIndustry.com. After nine car accidents, five concussions, and brain surgery, she decided that perhaps she was more suited to a quieter life. She and her husband and three dogs live happily and somewhat chaotically outside of Washington DC.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed this book, I love a little history thrown in, but to understand what people went through and the fear of decades past, are just horrible.
The characters are great, could have been a bit more masculine for the guys though. The narrator was great! I didn’t cringe at her different dialects. She did real well, loved all the animals and their personalities!
I listen to audiobooks at night to fall asleep and the next day I go back to what I last remembered, so it works for me. I love it that she doesn’t have so many characters that I need to keep a score card on them. It gets too confusing. A sweet mystery with a love story weaved in. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good narration so easy to listen to but the story took a while to ramp up with the first hour a little bit mundane for my taste overall an enjoyable book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Captivating unexpected ending well written a solid listening interest ✔️
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really enjoyed the book. No overly dramatic or impossible to believe story lines. Sounds like almost any family with deep historical roots.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Believable story with believable characters -excellent light read! Good author.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I did not like the ending, it really didn’t end. Explanations were not great and plot lacked something. Maybe she is setting reader up for a next book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very good story. I enjoyed the creativity and research the author put into creating this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The author’s attention to detail is impressive. Great narrator too. Could have been more suspenseful for the genre. And some of the dialogue was repetitive in its syntax, but that’s the nature of an audio book. All in all, a wonderful listen
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It’s a really good story but what blew me away was the narration. The variety of very believable, distinctive voices was incredible. She moved so seamlessly from one to another. It was the best narration I have heard on scribd and I listen to 5-8 books a week. Congratulations, we’ll done
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book was frustrating! It began so well - good story - great set up for what I thought would be a great mystery - boy that was not the case! Totally anticlimactic ending and weak resolution. It was ok at best.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was the second book, I could not stop listening until it was done. In fact, when I got distracted and missed a section, I would back it up to hear what I missed. I also liked that the author did not feel a need to go into the details of their love making. Some characters, who initially seem to be stereotypical, turned out to be much more complex. Kudos to an excellent narrator.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it… would like to listen to more in a series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Easy story to listen to but the iced tea was a little over the top.
