About this audiobook
Screwed up runaway teen lying to cover her tracks? Or victim of an unthinkable crime?
When a police officer comes to private investigator Sam Arbichaut asking for help with her teenage cousin, he can hardly refuse to at least listen. Everyone says the girl is a runaway, a liar, and a messed up kid.
Except the girl herself, who claims she was kidnapped.
And she says she wasn't alone.
Caught between multiple families, the police, and a powerful local church, Sam doesn't know who to believe.
But if the girl isn't lying... there might be twelve more just like her, trapped somewhere with an evil killer waiting to strike again...
This is the thrilling second book in the Sam Arbichaut mystery series!
Editor's Note
Clear, clean prose…
In the second book in the Sam Arbichaut mystery series, the former Florida cop turned Portland PI has to decide who to believe: a teenaged girl accused of being a runaway who claims she was kidnapped, or her family, who just want the girl to stop running away. The series blends the specifics of each case with the ongoing struggle of Sam wrestling with his new life, wondering who he is and where he fits in. Baines’ clear, clean prose makes Sam’s character come alive, and it’s almost as if Sam becomes a friend of the reader.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good story, tho easily figured it out about halfway thru.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Engrossing story! I really like the main character. The narrator did a great job! I recommend a listen!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A worthy Followup. Suspenseful. I enjoyed it. Really like the focus on characterization and relationship over environment, location, etc. It’s well done.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator was great l, not only in voice sound, but also how the text was made alive (which I believe is the single most important choice made about audiobooks). Storyline really worked and the various relationships between main characters were believable with authentic dialogue. Well done.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Portland is an amazing city. Why doesn't the author say anything about it? There are colleges, neighborhoods, expensive parts of town, Burnside, Mt Hood, sunsets, the waterfront and so much more.
Very few mentions of place.
And, please stop writing about circles under eyes so dark they look like bruises. There are other words to be used.
Decent story but not able to suspend believe for the boom. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent storyline and narration. Kept my attention from beginning to end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love this book!! Creepy and a surprise ending for sure!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book kept you not wanting to stop listening it's very good but makes you wonder what kind of people are out in our world and how many children go in noticed
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not particularly new or breaks the mould in any way but still a good beach read!

believable characters. Really enjoyed this one. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Enjoyed this book.lots of twists and insights into the heroes thinking.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Men must understand the threat young women guard against everyday.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Many options for villains were introduced, but alas the ending was not suspenseful. No twists in the plot or surprises.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very drawn out. Jus a listen
Meds better use of words - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5So slow paced that even a turtle would fall asleep, I can’t recommend this book. Although set in Portland, no sense of place is ever developed. I have to say great title, but the novel certainly disappoints. Alas, I’m not tempted to read anything else by this author.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great read. Good weaving of a well-written thriller that kept me guessing. Excellent narration.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The story was too long. Was like treading water-didn’t move along.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very thrilling book to listen to. The narrator is excellent and it is easy to get caught up in the story. Recommend this to anyone who appreciates mystery, with some drama and police investigations.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I got bored with the plot and the entire book. It wasn’t horrible but not on the level of suspense that I am accustomed to.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Definitely liked this better as first book. Probably because I already learned who was Sam, probably because case was more interesting. Some unexpected turns but must say that from the beginning I knew who will be the guilty one, or at least that made sense in my head and I am happy that I was right. It really made sense!

A new author for me to read!!! Very good book. No blood and gore just very interesting character developments. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story really enjoyed the book. I am enjoying this Author’s work
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It stop playing all through the book they call it buffering I call it wasting my time.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5An OK mystery but a bit weak intellectually. The plot was simple to follow.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed the first few chapters when there was an intriguing mystery and interesting characters, but then as soon as the perpetrator was identified it all went downhill and became very clichéd.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sam as the ex experienced cop is too erratic for his nearly hired job. It is a shame when a protagonist descended into unwelcoming spiral of chaos. The plot is too laughable despite the seriousness of the matter. The author should take note of many high quality tv shows for which a plot is refined for audience.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The book ended before the end. Was not happy, wanted to know who it was but it cut out
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The author clearly had an anti-religion agenda and her over-the-top caricature of the creepy church people would have been laughable had it not been meant seriously. I do wish authors would keep their prejudices out of their work and just focus on writing good fiction. I had thought I’d found a new authors to enjoy but I was wrong.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really really enjoyed this audiobook. I have MS that has affected the optic nerve so I have difficulty reading anything more than a page a day; thus I am extremely grateful for Audiobooks. This is the first book I've listened to by this author and she is definitely going on my favorite list. I also loved the narrator who captured the characters and mood throughout.
