About this audiobook

On a desolate road in the Oregon high desert, an apprentice mortician stumbles upon a horrific car crash--and into a vortex of treachery, long-buried secrets, and growing menace.

Melisende Dulac is a fish out of water after relocating from the East Coast to a small community in the Oregon high desert. But just as she's beginning to think of Barlow County as home, her life takes an ominous turn when she comes upon a grisly multiple car wreck and three shattered bodies on an isolated road outside of town. Near the scene, Melisende trips over a fourth body, that of a newborn girl lying a physics-defying distance from the wreckage. There is no one to claim the infant, nor a clear indication she was even part of the accident.

The crash offers plenty of opportunities for an apprentice mortician--but when the victims' bodies are stolen from her family's mortuary, Melisende is branded suspect number one. Then, Portland lawyer Kendrick Pride arrives on the scene on behalf of one of the victim's families--or so he says--and Melisende begins to see that there's much more to this enigmatic figure than meets the eye.

As the shadows gather and the mystery deepens, Melisende must race to find the truth--or be swallowed by the darkness.

Editor's Note

Dark and humorous…

Melisende Dulac is a newcomer in a small Oregon town when she stumbles upon a deadly car accident. Something seems off, and things get even stranger when the victims’ bodies are stolen from her family’s mortuary. “Crossroads” is an intriguing mystery that keeps you guessing, and it packs just enough humor to balance the dark plot.

I really loved that this book had a very likable main character who was probably autistic. AND it was not some inspirational story about autism either, just inclusive by having an autistic heroine. It was an interesting mystery/thriller with an ending that could not really be predicted.

Horrors of smaller community override backdrop of illegal adoptions. I like the innocence involved. Long and violent the colorful nature of violence is needing mature readers.

The story was interesting, but the fighting/ surviving descriptions were too much for me.

What a great book. The protagonist’s occupation lifted it above the average thriller. In my humble opinion this would make the start of a great series.

I really enjoyed this - the characters were interesting and not carbon copies (as in, the men weren't all studly, the women weren't all gorgeous). The plot hung together really well. I've spent time in that part of Oregon and loved the descriptions. One niggle - there are oregon-specific pronunciations which the narrator blew - Willamette for example. Otherwise, I liked the narrator a lot. Thanks for the listen.

Incredible violence throughout the entire novel, but the heroine being the victim, became tedious and beyond ridiculous. The author seems to relish in creating a female character, who is battered up to one side, and down the other, only to emerge victorious in the last three minutes. With one exception, every male character was incredibly evil, insensitive, chauvinistic, and they all talked in the same voice. I will admit that I got caught up in this story, but it needed a lot more editing a lot less I’m free, I’m caught, I’m free, I caught episodes. By the end, I felt like I just spent 8+ hours entrenched in someone’s pity party.

Contains bad language, but it didn’t bother me because I knew how the character felt. Great story! Wish there were more.

I made it to chapter 28 before I finally had to stop listening. This could be a decent story, but I just could not take any more of the main character’s over the top tortured soul, heavy on the mad at life and everyone in it. I found it to be very depressing. I went as far as I did waiting to hear the reason this chic was so angry.

Great plot line! The narrator was very pleasing, she didn’t sound like a bubblehead like so many do. The story has so many twists and turns and unusual mysteries, I think I need to listen again, or better yet, get the book! I wish there were more. Hope the series continues.

Story dragged with too many moving parts to stay interested. Took too long to connect. Male voices were all too misogynistic sounding. Couldn’t finish it

Well written. like the protagonist. A bit broken but strong. Not your damsel in distress type of woman.

Good plot characters were great good build on the story.

It was hard to get into this book. The main character is well portrayed by the narrator but it is a dull kind of voice. Rightly so.
My mind sometimes drifted and I had to rewind and listen again.
Still I consider it a reasonably good book.
