About this audiobook
It was the most fashionable place to stay in London, until murder made a reservation. Solve the puzzle in this new mystery from USA Today bestselling author of the Glass and Steele series.
December 1899. After the death of her beloved grandmother, Cleopatra Fox moves into the luxury hotel owned by her estranged uncle in the hopes of putting hardship and loneliness behind her. But the poisoning of a guest on Christmas eve throws her new life, and the hotel, into chaos.
Cleo quickly realizes no one can be trusted, not Scotland Yard and especially not the hotel’s charming assistant manager. With the New Year’s Eve ball approaching fast and the hotel’s reputation hanging by a thread, Cleo must find the killer before the ball, and the hotel itself, are ruined. But catching a murderer proves just as difficult as navigating the hotel’s hierarchy and the peculiarities of her family.
Can Cleo find the killer before the new century begins? Or will someone get away with murder?

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thoroughly enjoyed, a familiar theme, an independent female in late Victorian high society investigating a murder or crime by chance. A distant possible love interest and enjoyable minor characters too. It ticks all the boxes and this genre of book can so often be let down by flimsy characters or plot with multiple holes. However apart from one hole ( I won’t mention because of spoilers)
it was a great read, I’m happy there is a second book and if that’s as good as this I hope for a complete series.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this book!! Great voices!! Twists and turns and a surprise who did it.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Vapid. I like a lot of cosy mysteries, but this one is just weak.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good murder mystery, light hearted read, set back in 1890. Suited to teen readers perhaps
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another great book by this author. Great to listen to lots of little twists with some wholesome romance
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It’s really not a departure from other CJ writing, further confusing by the fact it’s narrated by the same narrator of the Glass & Steele series. If you’re expecting the same and reliable CJ, you will probably enjoy it. If you’re expecting a departure from the same old, you may be disappointed.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Cleo series has just enough of everything. I love all of them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very well written—enjoyable characters and intelligent plot. Nice atmosphere too.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Really enjoyable first in a cozy series but was just way too long. Looking forward to next in series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Fun and I didn’t hate the main character even if I didn’t always agree with her. The narrator was nice to listen to and overall I was engaged with the story. I would recommend!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A wonderful light, intriguing, wonderful novel. Enjoyed it right from the beginning. You want to know what's going to happen next and how it will all end. I loved it!!
