About this audiobook

On a fishing trip with his best friend, Mike, Sam Gunther witnesses a brutal crime at the hands of the infamous Stangler Brothers. Scared, he and Mike try to sneak away, but Mike is caught and murdered. When Sam returns to the scene with the police, all evidence has vanished, and the officers appear unwilling to investigate further. Sam makes plans to avenge his friend’s death, but when his act of revenge turns tragic, he must flee to protect his family from retribution. Hiding in a cave in the Arbuckle Mountains, Sam struggles to survive with the skills learned from his Green Beret father. Desperate to find justice for his friend and return home, Sam eventually discovers he's not the only one seeking vengeance on the Stanglers. He's soon pulled into an all-out war and is plunged into as much danger from his allies as from his enemies.

Author

Daniel Mitchell

Seduced by the book mobile at an early age, Daniel Mitchell grew up in a family composed equally of soldiers and teachers. He worked a variety of jobs from life guard stands to loading docks, managed the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, and spent some time in the oilfield building pipelines and perfecting the art of properly chosen expletives. For the last few decades he's been a public school teacher of English and Science in Oklahoma and Alaska. Happily married and the father of two children as shockingly attractive and intelligent as their mother, he holds a BA in English, an MFA in Fiction, has published his first novel, A Portion for Foxes, and is hard at work on the next one, Adelaide.

Authentic. I grew up in the same area and had the pleasure and misfortune of meeting people much the same as in the book. My thanks to the author for the trip down memory lane.

The writing style is pleasing with a sort of confidence that implies the reader will enjoy the tale.
The narrator was the perfect match for this role, delivering an enjoyable cadence and pace. Along with a perfect accent.
I guarantee that I will listen to this book again.

Mitchell’s writing of this book was masterful! Jacob McNatt’s reading of the audio version was one of the best I’ve listened to. Having listened to over 100 audiobooks this was by far the best in a very long time, pair these two together again soon please!

It was just about murders and retaliation between the thugs and the victims(?) in the lawless society. So, when someone close to you got murdered you just strike back even murder them and that settles things fine with no convictions?
Some parts were interesting and didn't bore me, though.
All in all this book left a bad taste in my mouth. I could do without listening to it.

Beautifully written. Pain and sadness in the characters, but also deeply human. Thank you. Well read as well.

Pretty good story, very well narrated, but a bit too much praying and god stuff to my liking...

Horrible book. It reminds me of what America has become. The good die while the weak live.
