About this audiobook

The dead won’t stay buried, and they’re raising dark secrets with them…Erick Darvaul just wanted to be left alone to grieve the loss of his parents, but when the citizens of the town showed up on his doorstep at night, he knew nothing would ever be the same. Long hated and feared by the townsfolk for their practice of Necromancy, the Darvaul family had always kept themselves apart from the people of Draymed. Until now. Now, there are vampires attacking the village, and only Erick can stop them. But will he? A Whisper of Death is the first book of The Necromancer Saga, a new hero’s journey saga from Paul Barrett, co-author of Knight Errant. Follow young Erick as he builds a band of companions around himself to fight against a rising tide of darkness that threatens to engulf the land. But he must take care, for all too often the darkness comes from within himself, or those he trusts the most.

Editor's Note

Intricate world building…

Erick Darvaul, a necromancer who’s recently lost his parents, must use his ability to communicate with the dead when vampires threaten the world. This first in “The Necromancer Saga” explores friendship, bravery, and good vs. evil — all brought to life by Barrett’s intricate world building. Fans of “The Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” will not be disappointed.

I wasn't sure about this one at first but a fun book filled with a diverse cast of characters, the main being unusual for a hero but it works.

I loved listening to this book. Such varied characters, and like all of us the heroes have their good side, bad side, loves, assumptions, and a past before the story begins. But many of the characters struggle through and grow because of it. I look forward to the next book.

Decent storyline, but the Marcus character sounds like a constipated middle-aged man instead of a teenager. Overall, reasonably entertaining

It is a refreshing change to see a necromancer as a protagonist. I grow bored with many epic fantasy's that have the same sort of protagonist, typically a mage of some common practice. While I enjoyed the book very much, I did feel like the characters could use a little growth. Perhaps that will follow in the next book.

This series has a fantastic magic system and world building. Too bad its buried under an unbearably narrow scope of horny.
The one female character in the entire rovel is basically a sexual object that can occasionally weild a knife. Then there's Eric, who's in such a constant state of horny, he constantly forgets he has another friend WITHOUT boobswho's trying to help him save the world. His familiar Blink is easily the best part of this book.

Great story! It’s a little slow at some parts but it’s long so that wasn’t too surprising for me. It actually made me think of Eragon (mainly the first book) meeting City of Bones. If you’ve read either of those series I think you may see the similarities. I loved Blink. I’ve never read/ listened to a homunculus being described this way and it was rather refreshing. He reminded me of Frankenstein in the way the author describe him throughout the story so if you like any of the stories Ive listed you may enjoy the book.

The voice actor/reader can be a bit stoic in his story telling but the story is also quite serious when you think about what’s happening. But at times he sounds uninterested in what he is reading, like you would read a textbook. But it didn’t ruin the story for me, it just took off a star.

I'm only giving this three Stars based on the voice actor who made the dialogue sound like crap I've read the actual book and the way he read it with no emotion and no nuance he just read the words on the page horrible audiobook great story.

This isn't worth it. The audio is subpar. But the writing is juvenile, the main character after the loss of his parents and being the focus of a mob looks at a woman's boobs before looking at her face while she is speaking to him. Someone in such a stressful situation wouldn't do that.

A Whisper of Death by Paul Barrett is the first book in The Necromancer Saga. It is about Erick Darvaul, a Necromancer, who is on a quest to find the original sorcerers to help destroy the dark ones. I liked this story a lot. It was engaging, exciting, and has me wanting more of Erick's story. I won this book in a giveaway from a blog I follow. All opinions are my own.
