Description

It’s a solo episode today and we have Erika in the hot seat sharing all about her journey with ADHD. Erika takes us through how and when she realized she may have ADHD, what prompted her to take the steps to receive a proper diagnosis, the changes, the freedom AND grief she felt upon being diagnosed, the tools she has implemented for support and why she considers having ADHD a superpower.

She shares with us the “telltale” signs of ADHD she had, what the steps to get tested looked like for her, the process of deciding to take medication and her experience in choosing the best medication, why she takes her meds for certain tasks and not others and the emotional release she felt the first time she felt the effects of her medication. We talk about how many women are getting diagnosed as adults, how young girls tend to naturally mask symptoms of ADHD, the struggles she had in school as a child and the negative stories she told herself as a result, and the process of now grieving as an adult for the child she was then.

We talk about the impact her diagnosis has had on her and her relationships, Erika shares the tools she has introduced to support herself, how “knocking off thoughts/ getting through to dos ” helps her throughout her day and quiets her brain, the communication shifts she has implemented,  and her BEST tip for dealing with the tasks you don’t want to do. She shares about struggling with lack of motivation around “uninteresting” tasks, the power of leaning into your strengths, the importance of finding the right systems, taking ownership in your life and setting yourself up for success, and the differences between listening and hearing in communication.

PLUS: The challenge of self assessment, removing the term “disability”, unlearning narratives and getting used to the QUIET in her head.
