Description

Christian Jochnik talks about regenerative agriculture this week. He is a former banker who changed his life radically and bought a piece of land in Ibiza. He now dedicates his days with his team of 20 people to regenerative farming and local food production. At Juntos farm, they are growing fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes. They produce compost and seedling and manage over a hundred goats. We’ll discuss small-scale farming, certification, fertilizers, trust in organic and data…Harvest is an event produced by Athena Advisers and Capital PartnersThis episode is sponsored by London Nootropics Coffee. You can order the Zen flavour with lion's mane mushroom and Rhodiola, or all the other blends at www.londonnootropics.com, with code HARVEST for 20% off. You'll also be able to taste them during Harvest! It is still time to book your ticket at www.harvestseries.com[2:24] - What's the goal of regenerative agriculture? Instead of having an extracting system, we should have a system feeding the ecosystem.[4:19] - How does he fight against pests? Nature regulates itself very well. Does he need chemicals sometimes?[7:11] - Why is there so much resistance when discussing regenerative agriculture?[10:14] - What was the intention when buying this land in Ibiza? It's so obvious that spreading poison on food is not healthy.[12:13] - Christian wants to be a profitable and successful model with data. With the financial challenges farmers are facing, we need to prove that it's a profitable business. [16:41] - The actual model of large-scale agriculture is wrong, we need a transition to small-scale and diversified farms, even if it's expensive and hard work. That's why Christian is investing in shared infrastructures. [20:51] - Are people ready to pay for quality? Yes, for Christian, it's a market failure. [22:00] - What is the problem of trust regarding organic? This is a fundamental problem for Christian. [23:44] - Data is what is going to make the big companies change. It will not be a question of trust anymore but of data. [27:50] - Christian is not a typical farmer. He has always loved nature, but worked as an investment banker in London before buying his land in Ibiza. [30:55] - Harvest of the Day : if something easy or simple could make the world a better place, what would it be for Christian? In two weeks, we will release Bob Thurman and Thupten Jinpa's interview in Kaplankaya. They are eminent tibetan buddhist scholars who met a long time ago, but it will be their first podcast together ever.
