    Introduction

I honestly feel that being a middle-aged woman is a curse that was passed down by Eve. Within the space of a few years, I feel like my entire body is plotting against me. I feel hot when I shouldn’t. I cannot sleep on my tummy without feeling like I am going to explode with spontaneous combustion. My tummy is filled with gas and I am bloated all the time. My body is betraying me. I don’t understand these strange aches and pains, these sweats that remind me of sitting in a sweat lodge. I honestly feel like I have gone through a time warp and have come out a little bit mangled by the journey. What is this? Can somebody please explain what is going on? These are the words of my funny friend Izzy.

This is the lament of scores of women the world over who are transitioning into their perimenopausal phase, which usually occurs as we emerge into our late thirties, forties, and beyond.

I used to wonder why my gran, then my mother and her friends seemed to change their entire way of being when they entered their forties and fifties. Instead of their stylish, colorful, figure-hugging ensembles, they began to dress in loose cotton pastel clothes or ditched their sexy lingerie for cotton granny panties and comfortable bras. I used to think that there was a spell that was cast over women in their forties that transformed them from femme fatales into dowdy old grandmas.

All of this became clearer to me as most of my close friends and I are reaching that scary juncture in our lives when we know for sure that we are no longer as young as we used to be. Menopause messes with our internal thermostat and hot flashes become the reason why you opt for loose cotton clothes and comfortable underwear. I get you now, Mom and Aunty Suzy.

We are all wary of looking in the mirror, as it seems that sometimes there is a stranger looking back. Overnight there are new lines that appear out of nowhere around my eyes or my frown lines look more defined, not forgetting the streaks of gray hair that suddenly appear. I look at my hands and squeal in disgust and reach out for the hand cream. It makes no difference that people are saying that the forties are the new thirties or the fact that social media bombards us with women in a similar age range who look like they are in their twenties. Ask any woman who is going through menopause and they will regale you with stories of their woes. Of course, there are those few women who are exceptions to the rule and they sail through this rite of passage into middle age without any hiccups, but this is by far a small percentage and they live in Japan.

Anecdotal evidence tells us a lot about what women go through in their forties, but it is interesting to look at the scientific body of knowledge to verify whether the old wives' tales actually corroborate facts.

The following physical changes occur in both men and women as they start their forties:

The list above seems endless and it all seems to go south for us as women when you look at the physical body—but it is not all negative, ladies. There are plenty of positive outcomes that accompany this period in our lives.

One major bonus of entering your forties is the confidence that comes with maturity. Many of us spend the first forty years obsessing about the meaning of our lives and our existence. If you are anything like me, I am sure you have spent countless hours trying to figure out where we have come from or whether there is life after death and a host of other existential issues. By your forties, you will likely have concretized your beliefs and opinions and you no longer spend time obsessing about these issues. There is also the knowledge and wisdom about your place in this world, and what it is that you want to do to contribute to it. Many of us have either found a partner or had a child or children and found a bit more direction and security.

On the other hand, the women who had an early start with marriage and children may find that they have more time on their hands as their children leave for college or move out. There is also the possibility that going through perimenopause or menopause could give you so much freedom and insight that you decide to completely change your life and leave your marriage and start being true to yourself. I have heard of tons of women who will no longer stay in a marriage that is unfulfilling and opt to go solo. This is also the time when men in their forties and fifties go through a midlife crisis and seek out younger women, leading to many divorcing after such infidelity. Women come into their own as they emerge into this phase of their lives.

I discovered that I no longer needed to seek approval from others as I entered this period of my life. That comes from getting to know yourself better and being comfortable with who you have morphed into. As I was growing up, I tended to be a people-pleaser and often needed to be liked, so I suppose I compromised more than I needed to; but when I entered my forties, I became more forthright and refused to be a pushover. I can now be resilient and do not care so much about conventions and societal expectations. When I look in the mirror, I see a flawed woman who has endured some struggles and whose face is looking a bit weathered, but inside that aging container is a gorgeous young spirit who is strong and accomplished.

The other positive aspect of stepping into my forties was leaving behind all the insecurities of the first forty years. Looking back
