ASK GF
Sex and body
Answered by Family Planning NSW associate medical director, Dr Clare Boerma.
Is it true that if you pee after having sex, it can reduce your chances of getting pregnant? I’m on the Pill but my boyfriend sometimes finishes inside me, and I’m wondering if going to the toilet afterwards is enough to decrease the risk?

Passing urine after sex won’t reduce your chances of pregnancy. Your urethra (the passage where the urine comes out) is separate from your vagina, and any sperm ejaculated inside are well away from where urine is passed. You may have heard this recommendation in relation to urinary tract infections, as urinating after sex may help prevent these. With typical use the Pill is 93 per cent effective at preventing pregnancy: so if 100 women use the Pill for one year, seven of those may become pregnant. With perfect use (taking it at the same time every day), it’s up to 99.5 per cent effective. If you sometimes forget pills, or are still concerned about getting pregnant, consider the more effective contraceptive options, like the implant or IUD (at least 99.5 per cent effective), or combine condom use with the Pill.
