Introduction
You have likely met that person that just seems they have it all together. When they speak, people listen. People even seem to be drawn to them. This is the art of charisma, and it is something with making a few changes in your behaviors you can too possess and master. You are already off to the best first step by selecting "How to be Charismatic" as a guide for your journey. The seven steps within this guide will help you and develop your skills in charisma.
Regardless of your situation and goals, one of the best tools you can have for success is charisma. The ability to draw others in, command a room, and convince them that your ideas can take you very far. Truthfully it is one of the best skills a leader can have to win over their teams. Those who are charismatic are often perceived as powerful, likable, dynamic, and irresistible. This combination can have endless doors opening for you.
It sometimes seems that people are just born with charisma like it’s a mysterious power gifted to them. There is good news; you do not have to hit the genetic lottery to become charismatic. The trait of charisma can be broken down into nonverbal behaviors and actions.
One of the things that those who are charismatic can do is put people at ease. Although, not an overwhelming amount of research is available to support this, many psychologists believe that it is related to the individual's tone of voice, body language, and listening skills. One of the key things that research is showing us that the way a charismatic person regulates their emotions is a contributing factor to how others perceive them.
Think of a typical day; everyone experiences things that are annoying, exciting, or sad. However, we all differ in our responses to these emotional experiences. Those who are charismatic have found a way not to allow these emotional blips to affect their day, nor do they allow others emotional experiences to affect their overall day. Think about yourself for a moment can you allow yourself not to be affected by the little things that irritate, annoy you, or make you feel a specific way that derails your day?
The ability to control your responses or how you respond to the situation is part of your emotional intelligence. Those who are charismatic have a firm grasp on their emotional intelligence and are good at bending their experiences. Leaders who employ charisma in their daily actions are the ones that typically are looking for the positive in every situation.
This is not to say they suppress their own emotions, but they understand what to say and when to say it, therefore, not building unnecessary tension. They are also exceptional at actively listening to others. As you actively listen to another person, you give them a feeling of value and that they are special. Think for a moment of that friend that seems to always have the right words after something bad has happened, or you have had a bad day. These people are valuable, and they give value more than they take, they make you feel like you are special no matter the circumstances, and that you can accomplish anything you find important. That friend is a great example of someone charismatic.
Chapter 1 - Step 1: Work Your Body Language
Let’s be honest; those who have charisma in their toolbox find opportunities more often than those who do not. One of the key factors of charismas is body impressions and body language. Charismatic people use body language as a substance for their actions and perspectives. You may even be able to recall an instance where a person who was qualified was overlooked because they simply could not project an attitude that was engaging.
Sociologist Max Weber originally coined the term charisma
. He used this term to describe leaders who were inspirational. For our purposes, we most often see someone who is charismatic as an individual that can compel us to accept or embrace what their vision is.
The biggest correlation in individuals who are charismatic is what they say, how they say it, and how they look meld together into a complete congruency. One of the biggest overlooked communication methods we use every day is our body language. Your body language is the communicator of your motivations, emotions, interests, and many aspects of your personality. Regardless of if you are pitching an idea to someone, interviewing for a job, you are more charismatic when you inherently align the belief with your words and body language.
When you want to increase your charisma consider these questions before you present yourself or your idea to others
What is the heart of my messages?
What are my true feelings about the message?
Is this message important to me?
Why would anyone else care about this message?
Those who are charismatic use a large range of nonverbal cues. Some of these cues include things like a genuine smile, eye contact, the use of gestures, touch, and many more. All of these things are skills you can learn to enhance your charisma level. The point here is to put these positive signals out into your activities and conversations, which is something that can easily be learned to enhance all your interactions.
One of the biggest discoveries people have found on their way to improving their charisma is they need to get out of their own way. Many times, the way you are carrying yourself is the biggest factor in getting people to buy into you. Think of someone you had seen present before that was not overly convincing. They may have been
