    Introduction

It is time to up your game and be not just a good public speaker but an excellent communicator. You have taken the very first step by selecting "How to Speak in Public" as your roadmap. You are not alone in the world; there are many people who shy away from public speaking when requested. Yet, public speaking quite possibly could be one of the most important skills you could develop in your career and life. The ability to speak in public is very important and ultimately could be a deciding factor as you advance your career and relationships, both professional and personal. It is most definitely a skill that will provide versatility to your life.

Throughout history, there have been many very defining moments that have resulted from those who were skilled in publish speaking. Take, for example, Martin Luther King’s I have a dream speech this inspirational speech still echoes throughout the world to encourage equality and peace. Or how about Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, this is the speech that defined him as a president and established him as a historical icon. The ability to shape and mold others, to unite or divide, have been greatly influenced throughout history by powerful public speakers.

As you grow as a public speaker, you will find that you improve your self-confidence. The society we live in is driven by materialistic desires, and there is no way for an individual to avoid it. Our personal self-worth and esteem come from what we think about ourselves, but also from how others perceive us.

Through the act of public speaking, you improve your skills with communication and, in turn, become more confident as you are around others. It also helps you to improve your skill in interpreting other people. This can improve your ability in general conversation as well. You are better able to understand and empathize with people as you converse.

Another reason public speaking is important is it is often the best way to get your message across with the littlest room for error as you speak to another person; they hear not just the words but also the tone. These are things that you cannot deliver when sending an email or through a written context.

Speaking opens words to a different level allowing the words to not only have meaning but gain emotion as well. This can help you to become a great influencer in your personal and professional life. This process also allows you to demonstrate your level of knowledge and expertise for the topic. It differentiates you from others in your position just simply by speaking up. The ability to speak in public can set you apart from others when you are looking for a promotion or prevent you from losing your job in instances of downsizing.

The following chapters will discuss seven easy and actionable steps to become a great public speaker. Each of these steps has been designed to help enhance your ability to speak the public. Public speaking is one of the most desirable skills in the workforce. Those who are seeking to advance their career or inspire their teams need to possess good public speaking skills. As you master these steps, you will find that you also improve your communication as a leader.

    Chapter 1 - Step 1: Planning for a Speech

Just like everything in the business world, it should all begin with a plan. Public speaking is no different. You may believe that you can simply just go wing it, and everything will be great. The crowd will shower you with cheers and clap wildly as you deliver your message if this is your experience, bravo. However, this is just not the case for the majority of situations.

    Gathering Information

As you begin the planning phase of your speech, you need to gather information. You need to know the who, what, how, when, and where. These will be the basic tools for creating your rough draft, or essentially the outline for your speech.

Who – This is your audience, who are you speaking to?

What – This is the subject, what is your speech about.

How – What is the time frame, how long do you have for your speech.

When – Time of day, Season, Etc.

Where – Environment, where physically are you.

So, as you gather this information, you may find that you need to alter things along the way. This is completely okay because you are flexible, and thinking through the process may spark a different idea here or there. Remember, our gathering phase is simply about getting the information in a rough draft process.

One method we suggest for doing this is using brainstorming. This is where you take a simple heading or topic, and then quickly write down everything you believe that relates to that topic. The purpose here is not to edit or judge yourself. You need to allow yourself to keep writing until you have no more ideas. There are no wrong or right answers through brainstorming. You will find that some of your ideas are brilliant and others will not be useful. That is a process you will do later as you sort your ideas. The use of this technique allows you to get your mind thinking, consider it as a kick start to creative thinking.

    Who

The first place to focus on is on the who; you need to know as much about your audience. This will prepare you to understand what they want to hear and design your speech in a way that will be most
