Introduction
Welcome to How to Develop Your Career. Are you ready to develop your career further? Or maybe you’re just getting started on your career and don’t know where to begin. Either way, you are at a very interesting crossroads. You might have experience elsewhere, or you could be starting from scratch. No matter what, however, you will need to know how to develop your career. Just about anyone can learn from being able to work on their career better, and that means that you should be more than willing to do what you can to work on it. If you want to be able to bring yourself that career success that you have always dreamed of, then you are in the right spot, and this guide is going to help you achieve it.
Ultimately, working is something we all must do, and that means we all need a work plan as well. You need some sort of idea of what you want to do with yourself so you can actually succeed in the world. No matter what it is that you will go out and do, you ought to know that you have options. No matter where you go or what you choose to do, if you are able to make it clear to yourself that you are working on something, you should be able to succeed.
Building that career development plan can be done in just a few simple steps—7, in fact, and we are here to guide you through them all. If you are ready to get started, then let’s begin—you will find that being able to get it done is going to benefit you significantly. As you go through this guide, you will be guided through 7 steps that will help you to develop your own career. We will begin with defining goals, so you know what you are doing in the first place.
Then, we will take a look at what you can do to identify your own strengths and weaknesses. From there, we will work to establish a game plan. Networking comes after that, followed by taking opportunities that are afforded to us. Step 6 brings us to being accountable for our own actions and recognizing that ultimately, we hold the responsibility here, not anyone else. Finally, step 7 in career development is constantly working to better yourself.
By always striving for better, you put yourself into a perpetual state of development due to the fact that you simply never settle. If you can do this for yourself, you will find that you can develop your career. You can discover that you will actually be quite capable of becoming the person that you want to be.
Let’s get started!
Chapter 1: Step 1 - Identifying Your Goals
Before you begin working on developing your career, you need to know what it is that you are setting out to achieve. Do you want to be a CEO? A doctor? Do you simply want to run your own business without having to answer to anyone else? No matter what it is that you want to do, you can figure it out one way or another. You just have to make sure that you set yourself a goal.
Roadmap to Success
Goals are like our roadmaps to success. They help us to get from point A to point B without getting lost. Let’s say, for example, you want to become a doctor. Your goal is there—you know that you want that MD as your end goal. However, how do you get there? You would need to go to school. You would need to pass several tests and more. Of course, that all require you to be willing to do so in the first place. By having your goal in front of you, you will begin to see that roadmap plays out in front of you so you can follow it and achieve whatever it was that you set out to do in the first place.
Within this chapter, we are going to establish just how important it is for you to begin identifying your goals so you can utilize them. We will see how they are able to motivate people and ensure that we stay on the right track. We will go over how to set a professional goal and how to track it to ensure that you are on track. Finally, we will go over the importance of maintaining motivation without feeling lost or stuck. This is imperative to this process—if you cannot maintain that motivation, how can you ever possibly achieve those goals that you set
