THE ART OF WHOLENESS, WELLNESS & HEALTHY LIVING - UwemObong Abraham

    FROM THE AUTHOR

This is my very first book! I am very excited about it! Several times, I have been inspired to write books, but I never really saw them through as a result of some distractions, lack of content, and/or no perseverance.

I felt the compulsion to see this through because the world is looking for this book. The usual procrastination and writer’s laziness came, but a higher compelling force kept bringing the course of this to my attention for execution. I believe that was the Holy Spirit urging and nudging me to put down what He inspired me to do as a result of deep research.

I want to thank God Almighty because it was in the course of writing this book that I realised the true meaning of the maxim: Necessity is the mother of invention

My near-death experience and surviving what I later found out was a heart attack, in 2016, on my way to work in traffic was what gave birth to this inspiring and deep research journey into healthy living.

I was seeking to rid myself of 145kg weight and constant reflux ailment when I slept. The transformation was so staggering that people urged me to share my journey to healthy living with others grappling with similar experiences.

This blindsided me as I did not see it coming. Still, in the height of the COVID-19 peak period, this concept was birth through virtual reality and the need to put this in a book became compelling to help people understand that they are Unknowingly Unhealthy in Living and why the Weight Will Not Go Away with their Root Causes.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I give thanks firstly to God Almighty for granting me the grace, knowledge, wisdom, intellect, and understanding to put this first book together. It was a struggle initially because everywhere I made presentations on healthy living the first question they asked me was whether I had written a book yet. And so, I started this journey more than a year ago, but when the grace came, the process moved very rapidly to the conclusion.

I also thank my friends, family members and participants in my healthy living program who have all been on my case and have encouraged me to put these ideas down into a book.

I also thank Dr. Ekpan Koshy my Senior Medical Consultant who has been encouraging me and putting nice tips where needed to help me along the way.

I also thank my Publishers for the proofreading and direction in ensuring that this work turns out as professionally as it ought to.

    PROLOGUE

Healthy Living has eluded us for so many years. It seems the closer we thought we were to it, the further away it flew. It would seem that no one can get a complete handle on exactly what is Healthy Living and how one should attain the same.

This may be what is responsible for why we could hardly put a finger on anything as the way to go towards healthy living. Every day, we are inundated with several myths, studies, and research that approbate and reprobate on the subject of healthy living.

Indeed one of my participants asked a very interesting question when called on to join our program. She asked how many would she do. A pang of frustration indicated she’d done so many of them with little or no results.

Just when we thought we had finally put a wrap on it, like a slippery catfish, it dribbles past us again and we are practically back where we started.

There does not seem to be any go-to book that has all the answers, like a turnkey completed project that we can follow as a guide.

Everyone seems to contradict each other and while these contradictions are raging, so many people are falling sick and dying as we continue to fish in mucky water to ascertain exactly what way we are supposed to lead a life that would make us sickness and disease-free!!!

I was very fat and I did not even know it! As strange as this may sound, I never felt I was fat and no members of my family called me fat. With the benefit of hindsight now, I know how much my family loved me and did not want to hurt me by telling me I was fat. I think perhaps only my parents occasionally would insinuate it, by asking if I was no longer jogging or exercising like I used to. The moment they asked me that, it might be that I was perhaps too fat!

I was very active and sporty. I still am. I ran 5.3 kilometres virtually every other day and played soccer almost every weekend. I took part in the sporting activities in my children’s school and I always won the Father’s 100 Meters dash. Except for the last time, I got a Silver Medal instead of Gold because I ran against a much younger, taller and faster Dad.

I always used to wonder why people had difficulty believing that I was returning those times in my sprint/ racing. I would see the conflict and confusion on their faces because anyone my size then, should not be able to complete 100 meters in less than 12 seconds and also run fastest compared to people way out slimmer than himself, if you like.

My alma mater, Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, Nigeria Old Students Association, was once invited for an invitation relay and I ran the race of my life. We came a very close shave second and won a Silver Medal again, even though I had body aches for days.

I enrolled my family in the Estate Gym and ran for at least an hour on the treadmill daily. This was apart from the daily early morning runs.

I always used the gyms in hotels when I travelled and in the absence of a gym, I would run a minimum of 8 kilometres on the streets of my location, virtually daily.

This was like a pastime and no one ever described me as fat. I felt good about myself and everywhere possible if or when I was challenged to a duel in sports, I was always available to take up the challenge. I never backed down. I won most time and lost sometimes.

Then came the first Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in February 2016. I was very glad and immediately registered to participate. I remember my office staff smiling mischievously when I showed them my kits for the marathon. I wondered why they had little or no faith in my running abilities.

I had trained and trained and trained for the marathon by running for at least 15 Kilometers, even though it took me forever to complete the training courses. I would start the course by 5:00 am and I would not complete 15km until almost noon. I consoled myself that this was just training sessions, and timing was not important.

I arrived early for the kickoff of the Access Bank/ Lagos City Marathon, 2016. Interestingly, just as I was rounding 5 kilometres in the marathon, the
