Being Present by Being Mindful - Michael W
Introduction
Do you recall when John Lennon sang about life being what occurs while we're busy making other plans? Maybe he was suggesting that we choose conscious living over our automatic impulses.
More of us are becoming aware of how little peace of mind we have in this hurried environment. We work ourselves so hard that we frequently don't remember how we arrived from point A to point B. Depression and anxiety problems are on the rise, and our rushing as a lifestyle goal appears to have no end in sight. But we realize that something has to change.
Mindfulness
has become a popular keyword that can be found all over the Internet. But it's far more than a passing fad. It has worked for ages to offer serenity and resignation to our busy brains and lives. It's a way of life in every moment.
What Exactly Is Mindfulness?
So, exactly what is mindfulness? It is being conscious of where you are and what you are doing at any given time. It's paying attention to what's going on for us right now on purpose. If this sounds straightforward, you are correct. However, it is not always simple. Our minds are continually travelling back in time, frequently to fret or brood, or forward in time, frequently to worry.
You may have considered several things within the time it took you to read that little paragraph. What to do for supper, how you want to order pizza, how your partner whined about wanting a homecooked meal the previous time, the rising cost of your favorite pizza place, your financial balance, etc., etc.
This form of stream of consciousness
thought occurs repeatedly throughout the day.
And that's fine. Being present or practicing mindfulness does not imply harshly judging ourselves for daydreaming about the past or the future. The goal is to gently draw our minds back whenever we discover they have wandered away from what we are currently experiencing, without being overly reacting. Being present practice allows us to respond rather than react. Instead of succumbing to overwhelm, we can slow down and
