About this ebook

It was my first year as a trapper when I encountered the undiscovered tribe. I was a part of an expedition led by Clark Harrison, a seasoned and experienced trapper in his own right.
This was by no means, Harrison's first expedition, and it had been a fruitful one, so far. We had managed to trap our fair share of beavers along the stream we were following, and we were poised to hit our quota for the expedition far ahead of schedule.
After having trapped our fair share of beavers along the stream we decided to follow its currents and see where it would lead us.
I was only a young man of twenty summers then, and this only excited me even more than I thought.

The Undiscovered Tribe - John J. Law

    One: The Grizzly Attack

So far, every part of the expedition had excited me and left me with much enthusiasm for the next day. I had seen wonders of the natural world that I would never have been privy to if I had continued my work as a blacksmith and a forger in general iron works. I had seen mountain ranges that stretched as far as the eye could see and a horizon dotted with trees and grassland that seemed to stretch for an eternity. I had come into close contact with wild animals that I had only heard or read about. Some of them definitely posed a danger to me and the other men, but so far, I was still alive and savoring every minute of it. If anything, I had never felt more alive than I did now traveling with these men and trapping and hunting while exploring the wilds.

As we had already trapped many beavers, we descended and followed the flow of the stream to see where it would take us. We probably hiked a good 15 miles until we came to a large and beautiful valley. The valley was easily fifteen miles or so long, and four or five wide. It was quite a wide stretch of land that was flanked by two giant mountains on either side. The whole scene was quite stunning and breathtaking, and I had to pause and take a deep breath to take it in. Even the other men did so, as well. The valley was so beautiful and there was something to be said about riding or hiking through the outdoors like this. It seemed to provide much nourishment for the soul, something I sorely needed. And if being outdoors nourished the soul, the same could not be said about working as a blacksmith.

For me, such work did not nourish the soul. If anything, it seemed to suck the life out of me completely, leaving me a dry husk, or a shell of a man. I never felt such inspiration and inspiration working on wood and metal in a cramped space, than I did now. Walking out here and savoring what I saw, was simply awe-inspiring, even if I
