About this ebook

Dolores ran towards the flickering light and smoke. She ran as fast as her exhausted legs could take her. She pushed herself with all the remaining strength and endurance she could muster. The fire burned stronger and stronger until she finally came upon it. When she was right in front of the campfire, Dolores spotted a strange-looking man. The man was roasting an animal over the fire, and he looked quite intimidating. The man looked just as threatening and dangerous as Wellington, but Dolores didn't think of that now. She had no choice but to trust and hope that the man would help her.
"Help me, help me, please mister..."

Lincoln Dollar - The Devil Is In The Details - John J. Law

    CHAPTER ONE

This Wasn’t the First Time This Happened

Wellington Aries looked everywhere for his wife, Dolores. He looked in their shack and almost turned the entire place upside down. She wasn't there, and Wellington knew that she had run away again.

He ran out of their house and asked his neighbors. It was getting late, but he didn’t care. He had to find his wife. He knocked on the door of the other houses and asked the same question, over and over again.

Any of you seen Dolores? She’s not in the house!

Wellington got the same answer every time to the same question.

She ain’t here, Wells. She must have run off again.

After knocking around every single shack in the small encampment, Wellington gritted his teeth. He had to face the facts now. Dolores had run away again. He wasn’t really surprised anymore, but that didn’t make it any less difficult.

She’s musta run off into them woods again! This keeps happenin’ over an’ over!

One of the men approached Wellington and put a hand on his shoulder. Don’t worry. I’ll help you get her back. I reckon most of the men will help you, as well.

Wellington was grateful for his neighbor’s kind gesture, but he was also ashamed to accept it. After all, this wasn't the first time his wife had run out into the woods.

I appreciate the gesture Clay, but I’ve got to find her on my own. She’s my wife an’ all.

Clay shook his head. Stop talkin’ nonsense, Wells. You were the one that established this little settlement of ours. You were there when we needed you, we ain’t never going to turn our backs on you when you need help.

Wells was moved with gratitude. He was glad to have good men like this on his side. Thank you, all of you. I really appreciate your help. Well, let’s get this over with then. I sure don’t want to keep you out later than you have to be. Time to get my wife back.

    CHAPTER TWO

    The Silent Witness.

Dolores just kept running. Her legs were aching, and it felt like fire was rushing through them, but she kept running. She could barely catch her breath, and she felt like collapsing on the ground, but she didn't dare stop. She couldn’t stop running. If she stopped running, they would get to her. They would find her, and they would tear her to pieces.

She tried to push back that last thought. She didn’t fancy the idea of being eaten alive and torn apart. However, this was the fate that she faced if she stopped running. They’re comin’ to get me. They’re comin’ to get me, and I can’t stop running...

She could already hear them behind her. She heard the sound of the horses’ hooves beating on the ground. She heard the sound of the men frantically pushing their steeds to their limit. She knew her
