Deadly Secrets Free (Billionaire Shape-Shifter Romance Series Book 4) - Alice Jamison

    Chapter One

Footsteps pounded behind Elsa as she ran down the narrow hallway of the cruise ship. She glanced behind her to gauge the proximity of her pursuer. She squinted, trying to make out his blurred image. She turned back around to make her way up a flight of stairs. Help me! She screamed at the crowd of passengers gathered on deck. No one seemed to hear her. She came to a stop and spun around in a circle, studying the faces in the crowd. Why was everyone ignoring her? She stared into the blank eyes of a passenger, and then another. She frowned. Something was wrong; they all seemed to be in some kind of a trance.

Elsa backed away from the crowd. There was no one there to help her. She retreated until she reached the platform to exit the ship. She turned around, trying to decide if she should stay on board or seek help on the island. She spotted the blurred figure pushing through the crowd, rushing toward her. She made a quick decision, and turned to scamper down the platform. As soon as her feet hit the sand she picked up speed, moving as fast as her body would allow. Why wasn’t she seeing anyone? Surely people lived here. The cruise ship wouldn’t have docked on a deserted island. She was overwhelmed with confusion. The strange behavior of the passengers, the lack of activity on the island; none of it made any sense.

She halted when she reached the entrance to a heavily wooded area. Venturing into a dark unknown forest wasn’t the best idea, but she had no choice. It was either into the woods, or turn around and run back into her mysterious pursuer. She let out a defeated groan and darted into the woods. She ducked past hanging tree limbs and skipped around low bushes. Her lungs began to burn and her limbs began to feel numb. She had pushed herself beyond her physical capabilities and her body protested. She had to stop. Slumping against a tree trunk, her chest heaved as she labored to fill her lungs with air.

If it isn’t the fornicator herself, a voice sneered. Elsa jumped, instantly recognizing the voice.

She pushed herself to stand up. Her eyes widened. G-Gordon, you’re supposed to be dead. He remained silent. He leered at her and began treading toward her with deadly intent. Elsa took retreating steps backward. How could Gordon Reeves be alive? She had seen his lifeless body with her own eyes.

Hello, my sweet Elsa. She whirled around at the sound of another familiar voice. Terror gripped and paralyzed her.

Justin, she whispered, barely able to breathe. How was any of this possible? People didn’t just rise from the dead.

He sneered, Did you really think it was over, Elsa? He let out a wicked laugh, We will never stop until you’re dead. His eyes glowed a bright yellow, and his malevolent smile revealed wicked fangs.

Elsa’s eyes darted wildly between Gordon and Justin. There was no escape. She was going to die. No, please, she begged. She didn’t want to die. Her life had just begun to fall into place. She was no longer alone in the world. She had found someone to share her life with, and she was happy. She didn’t want to leave him behind.

I like when you beg, Elsa, Justin stated. He rushed toward her, his fingers lengthening into sharp talons. She let out a piercing scream as he lifted them to slice at her neck.

Elsa...wake up...come back to me, the smooth baritone voice seeped into her nightmare gripped mind. Strong hands gently shook her shoulders. Her eyes flew open, instantly making contact with a sea of green. Her breaths came out in rapid, short puffs. Her body shook uncontrollably, still wracked with the terror of her vivid dream.

    Charles? she asked weakly.

I’m here, baby. You were dreaming. He peered down at her, his face twisted with concern and a touch of fear. Elsa pushed herself up on her elbows and he reluctantly released her. She glanced around the hotel room in relief. She continued to push herself up into a sitting position. Her breathing finally started to slow down, and the rapid pounding of her heart subsided. She lifted a hand to wipe at the beads of sweat on her forehead.

Elsa glanced at Charles who watched her intently with hooded eyes. He remained silent waiting for her to speak. She inched toward him and he opened his arms without hesitation, engulfing her in is embrace. He planted a soft kiss on her forehead. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. I think I’m going to be plagued with nightmares for the rest of my life, she said softly. Why won’t they just go away?

Charles sighed, You have been through a lot, Elsa. It will take a while for you to get over certain things.

She snorted, A while? I don’t think I will ever get over certain things. The Caribbean Paradise had docked in Florida just the day before, finally ending their deadly and terror-filled vacation. Elsa shuddered; it would be a cold day in hell before she went on another cruise. She would forever associate cruises with blood, death, fear, and pure misery. The one good thing that had come out of her summer get away was the man holding her in his arms. She snuggled closer to him, inhaling his intoxicating masculine scent.

It still amazed her how quickly he had become her world. She has known him for only a couple of weeks but she was already madly in love with him. Something about him had called to her from the very first time she laid eyes on him. At first she couldn’t understand why he had invoked such strong feelings in her, but now she understood completely. She was his true life mate and he was hers. The man she had fallen in love with was no ordinary man. He was something that she had always looked upon as mythical and fictitious.

She remembered her shock when she found out that he wasn’t exactly human. He was a wolf shifter. Sure, she had passed out when he had first shifted before her eyes, but she was well over it now. What
