Deadly Secrets Threats (Billionaire Shape-Shifter Romance Series Book 5) - Alice Jamison

    Chapter One

Bliss. That is what this is. Elsa stood in the doorway of little Victor’s bedroom, watching as Charles tucked him into bed. She smiled, her eyes getting watery. Wiping at a stray tear, she sniffed. Damn my hormones. She seemed to cry about everything these days. She lifted a hand to rub her very swollen belly. Charles kissed Victor’s forehead and reached to turn off the light. Elsa never thought she would be standing in the doorway of her child’s room watching her husband tuck him in. It has been six years, but she still couldn’t believe she had reached such a happy point in her life.

Charles strolled toward her, He’s finally asleep. His smile turned into a frown when he noticed her misty eyes. Baby, what’s the matter?

Elsa sniffed again. I’m just so happy. You know how emotional I get over the simplest things nowadays.

He visibly relaxed, his smile reappearing. Yes, I know. Come, let’s get you into bed. Taking her hand he led her down the hallway.

Oh my God, I’m like a heavy, pregnant duck, she complained. I’m literally waddling.

Charles chuckled, But you are a very cute duck.

She let out a snort, Yeah, cute and ready to pop at any minute.

His eyes widened, I hope not any minute tonight.

The look of horror on his face made Elsa laugh. Memories of his panic when she had gone into labor with Victor played in her mind making her laugh harder. He scowled, aware of what she was thinking about. You will never let me live that down, will you? She shook her head, still giggling. He lifted her into his arms.

She let out a squeal when her feet left the floor. Charles, what are you doing? Put me down. I weigh a thousand pounds.

You are as light as a feather, my love. Reaching their bedroom, he gently placed her on the bed and he stared down at her.

Okay, now it’s my turn to ask. What’s wrong?

I’m happy that you are happy.

Smiling, she said, You have given me everything I have ever wanted. Now, get in here with me. He obeyed, stretching out beside her. Placing a possessive hand on her stomach, he planted a kiss on her lips.

    Get some sleep, he ordered.

You don’t have to tell me twice. I’m beyond exhausted. Being pregnant is a full-time job. Within minutes, she drifted off to sleep.

Charles propped himself up on his elbow and studied her. His heart soared, knowing that she was his forever, his true mate. How did I get so lucky? She had brought happiness into his life since the moment he first laid eyes on her six years ago. Lifting a hand, he caressed her cheek. She stirred slightly. When he knew she was in a deep sleep, he eased out of the bed. It was still quite early, barely nine o’clock, so he figured he could make a few calls, calls he didn’t want Elsa to know about because he didn’t want her to worry about anything. Taking one last look at her sleeping form, he left the room and headed to his office. Settling into a chair, he decided to start with Victor.

What is it, kid? Is my goddaughter alright? She isn’t in labor, is she?

Charles’s eyebrows shot up. Hello, to you too, Victor.

    Oh right, hello.

    Elsa is fine.

Good, good. So there can only be one other thing that you are calling about. I haven’t heard anything about them on the streets, kid. There is no sign of the remaining members of the council. Why are you worrying? We took out Ronan years ago and his pack scattered. There hasn’t been any word of them in six years.

Charles sighed, I know. I suppose I’m just paranoid. He and Elsa had finally found peace, and although it has been an uneventful six years, he was still afraid that something would happen to ruin it. He wanted nothing more than to keep his family safe, so if there was any threat, he wanted to find out early so he could eliminate it.

Damn it, kid. Relax, would you? He paused, And my ears are always open. You will be the first to know if I hear anything.

    Great, thanks, old man.

Hanging up the phone, he dialed another number.

Grimm, how are you? Thomas answered.

    Uneasy.

Thomas paused, I don’t think you have any need to be. I haven’t heard anything about any threats, and I have been listening carefully.

Charles sighed, I don’t know Thomas. I just have a bad feeling. It’s probably nothing. Maybe it’s just anxiety over my growing family. I guess having a little girl on the way is pushing me into overprotective mode.

There was chuckling on the other end of the line, Which is why I avoid ending up in your situation.

Charles grunted, You say that now until you meet the love of your life. How are things at the office?

Just fine. You would know if you dropped by once in a while, but I suppose you have way better things to do at home than run your billion dollar company, he said teasingly.

You’re damn right I have better things to do here. Besides, I’m confident that you and Stephen can hold down the fort.

Snorting, Thomas said, You mean I can hold down the fort. Let’s leave Stephen to partying and being a jackass.

Charles laughed, As long as things are under control, I don’t care what he wants to do. Anyway, I will talk to you later, and remember to call me the instant you hear or see anything.

    Sure thing, boss.

Charles sat silently for a few minutes. Perhaps everyone was right and he was worrying for nothing, but he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was going to go wrong. Releasing a sigh, he got up. I need to blow off some steam, he murmured. Walking to the window, he pushed it open. He peered down into the darkness from the second floor of his massive mansion before leaping over the windowsill. Landing on the balls of his feet, he broke off into a run. As he reached the wooded area beyond the backyard, he began to transform. His face took on the shape of
