Deadly Secrets Secrets Revealed (Billionaire Shape-Shifter Romance Series Book 2) - Alice Jamison

    Chapter One

Charles landed on his back, hitting the ground with a loud thud. The air was instantly knocked out of him. He lay still for a moment, unable to breathe. Elsa. He had lost her. Pain sliced through him. He thought of letting his adversary take his life. What was the point of fighting? The one person that he had found a true connection with was gone. Elsa had bought color into his grey world. He was all alone, once again; first his father and now Elsa. The thought of returning to a lonely existence was not appealing to him. He watched as the masked figure ran toward him. He still wondered who was beneath the mask. It was undoubtedly another shifter, but why wasn’t his presence known before tonight? The ship had left port three days ago and this mystery shifter was never once detected. He was good at hiding his presence. Charles wondered if he was in league with his nemesis, Victor.

His mind stopped racing, stopped trying to find answers. None of it mattered now; he shut his eyes tightly. This was it, he decided to let go. Just before the man pounced on him, Charles heard a soft cry. Could it be? It came again.

Charles! Elsa cried, her small voice carried by the wind as the large cruise ship sliced through the dark water. Charles’s eyes sprang open, Elsa. It could be his imagination, because he wanted so badly for her to be alive. It didn’t matter in that moment. The sound of her sweet voice, even imagined, gave him renewed motivation and sprung him into action. He rolled to his left, dodging the masked figure as he jumped, aiming extended, sharp claws at his chest. The man grunted in frustration when he realized he missed his target. He spun around, preparing himself to attach again. Charles jumped nimbly to his feet and crouched, ready for the next attack.

Charles, help! I’m slipping! Elsa’s voice sounded again. It really is her. Relief flooded through Charles’ entire being. He had to get rid of his adversary and get to her. The urgent need to get to Elsa brought the beast inside of him to the surface. His hazel eyes flashed a golden yellow and his fingers transformed into lethal claws, ready to shred his enemy to pieces. He gave a low menacing growl as he set his eyes upon the masked man with deadly purpose. This was the man who had attempted to take Elsa away from him. With that thought he lost all control and the wolf within him took over, momentarily rendering him more animal than man. His attacker raced toward him and he took off to meet him half way.

Both men pounced, meeting in the air, claws clashing. Charles’s talons struck flesh, digging into the man’s chest, creating a long gash. The masked man hissed in anger and pain. He looked down at the gaping wound on his chest, and hesitated; deciding if he should strike at Charles again. A growl rumbled in Charles’s throat, daring his enemy to make another move.  The unknown man’s eyes flashed in the darkness, his fist bunched. He could not meet Charles’ challenge. He decided not to retaliate and turned, fleeing into the darkness of the ship and leaving a trail of blood as he ran.

Elsa hung on for dear life. She had been pushed overboard by someone wearing a black mask. The scene had played out just like the nightmares she had been having for the past few weeks.  She was chased to the end of the ship in the most recent version of her nightmare. Only in her dream she woke up just as the shadowy figure rushed toward her. Her worst dream had just become reality. She held on tightly to the edge of the ship’s floor. She slowly turned to peer downwards, whimpering in fear at the sight of the imposing sea below her dangling feet. The pristine blue water was blackened by the darkness of the night. Her fingers slipped slightly and panic rose in her chest. Oh no, she didn’t know how much longer she could hold on; and worse she didn’t know how to swim. If she lost her grip, she would surely drown. Why didn’t I learn how to swim? She made a mental note to sign up for swimming lessons if she survived. Although her chances of survival were looking pretty slim at that moment.

Her fingers slipped again, Charles, help! She wondered if he could hear her. What if he was hurt, or worse? She prayed he was alright. Her arms began to burn and tremble from holding her body up for so long; her fingers were starting to feel numb. She cursed herself for having never subscribed to a gym. If she was in better shape, she would be able to hold on much longer. Oh God, I’m going to die. Her life flashed before her eyes. She was never going to see Lisa again, her only friend; just when their relationship had really started. She was never going to see Charles again; never get to explore her feelings for him. She thought of how close they had come to making love. Now she wished they had, it would have been her first experience. Now she was never going to have that experience. It’s just my luck to die a virgin

She couldn’t hold on any longer. She closed her eyes and prepared herself to hit the cold, black abyss. She took a deep breath, ready to meet her end. A warm hand clamped around her wrist, her eyes flew open and she looked up to see Charles. Her heart soared - he had come to her rescue once again. She was glad to see that he was unhurt. Charles, she whispered his name as if it was a talisman.

I’m here. He anchored himself with his free hand and slowly pulled her weight upward, until she was standing beside him. He assisted her over the rail then climbed over himself. Elsa collapsed on the floor, her breathing irregular as she thought of how close she had come to dying. Charles instantly pulled her up and into his arms. She wrapped her hands around him tightly, still shivering from her brush with death. "My God, Elsa, I thought I had lost
