About this ebook

"I would like to say I'm sorry; I haven't been the best version of myself. I am sorry for my inability to communicate effectively, and I know these past few weeks haven't been the best."
"I do not want your apology, Xavier; I want to know why you have changed so much and become someone I barely know. I want to know what happened." She said, staring up at him, "Was my love never enough?" She didn't want to show her vulnerability, but he had always seen it.
"It was always enough," he said as he stepped towards her, crossing into her personal space.
Her heart picked up its pace, and she stared up at him. She could have told him to step back, but she wanted this. "You were always enough. I am sorry if I made you feel like you weren't." He said, and his lips met hers.

The Alpha King's Last Wish - Glory Tina

    Chapter 1: Prologue

    Three months ago

Fada! Lyon called, running down the stairs to where King Xavier stood beside his carriage, which had just brought him home. Queen Mia followed behind the little boy with a smile, holding the baby boy in her hand.

He dropped to his knees with his arms open as he welcomed his son into a loving embrace. Lyon, he breathed in satisfaction.

Welcome home, Fada! he said, his little arms wrapping around what they could of his father's neck. We have missed you.

At his words, Xavier's eyes lifted, and he saw Mia, his mate, and Luna Queen standing not so far from them. His smile increased, knowing that was the face he had longed to see for so long.

Mia, my love, he called, stretching his hand out to her. She stepped towards him and took hold of it quickly. At the touch, he felt a spark ignite within him; he was home.

Wahala has missed you, my king. She bowed her head.

My king? He seemed shocked she had taken his title instead of his name as usual. I thought I was your husband before I was your king.

She smiled and nodded her head. True. Sometimes, a maiden forgets you can't blame me when all I have in mind is ruling and nurturing in your absence.

His eyes dropped to Kim, their son in her arms, before staring back at her. I am back now to relieve you of your duties, and I would love to be called by my name. He told her and rose to his feet to kiss her lips.

    She kissed back.

My king. Alpha Koz greeted them from not so far away, and they pulled away from the passionate kiss.

Xavier's eyes turned to the elder of his council. Alpha Koz, I looked forward to finding you on my return, but I didn't want to be too optimistic.

Alpha Koz bowed humbly when he got to the king. Well, I am here, just finishing my duties for the day.

Then I will not keep you; Luna Elena deserves to have the man she loves home on time. He spoke. We shall talk when you resume in court tomorrow. How does that sound?

That would be most generous, my king, he said, bowed his head again, and took his leave.

How was your journey to the kingdom of Jade? Mia asked as she helped Xavier take off his robe. They had tucked their sons into bed already, and it was their turn to retire for the night. I heard the king, Aeon, is just as hot-headed as they come.

Xavier frowned at her. You know better than to believe what rumour says about someone, my love.

You are right, so how was the king of Jade? she asked.

Well, he is as hot-headed as they come. He said, quoting his exact words, which he had just called rumours.

His words made her frown back at him; however, he continued to speak before she could. But just like me, he has a Luna queen that keeps him in check, Queen Olivia.

I would love to meet her someday, she said, already sounding fascinated by the information she just received.

If we are lucky, you might before the war begins. He said and pulled her closer to himself, his eyes darting over her with desire and need in them, making them flare. But I have missed you, my darling, he declared, and his longing eyes settled on her lips.

And I have missed you, Xavier, she replied, and a moan accompanied her words.

He raised a brow as he stared into her eyes. Really?

She scoffed at his audacity in questioning her words. You were gone for two moons; I have feelings and desires too.

His gaze dropped to her lips, and they remained there. Really? Show me how much you missed me, then.

He was playing with her, and she knew it. If she hated his games, it didn't show in her response. She leaned in, pulled him closer, and kissed his lips. It was a soft and sensual kiss; her tongue touched his as she deepened the kiss and ignited the fire that had stayed dormant between them.

Xavier's hand swam through her hair before grabbing a full fist. He wanted control, and this was his way of showing it. She didn't fight him; she wanted him to dominate her.

Every day, all I think about is the coming war, he moaned as he pushed her into bed. I have to do what I have to do. He hissed and took her lips for a deep and long kiss.

You do not have to explain; I understand. She told him but knew if he were speaking, he wouldn't stop just because she understood his point.

I had to do what I had to do, but I hated leaving you and Lyon. I always hate leaving. She felt his kiss run down her neck and curled closer to him in anticipation of more.

I know that, she answered, her eyes tightly shut. Her desire was peaking, but she feared that Xavier would talk it out of her. Just touch me, she pleaded.

He kissed her shoulder and chest, marking her skin with his warm mouth. This desire wouldn't be too unbearable if there were a way around it, you know. He breathed against her skin, making her squirm against him.

Groaning, Mia pushed him off a little, and he pulled back, startled. Do you want to know what is unbearable? she asked, her brow rising. This! We either take each other, or we talk; you pick which one you would rather do.

He hesitated but understood her point. There is so much in my head, he admitted.

I know, she replied and smiled at him. We take it one step at a time. She stood up from the bed and took off the rest of her dress, and as it hit the floor, she walked to the bathroom.

He knew what that meant; she wanted him to follow behind. To do that, however, would mean he would have to abandon every thought that wasn't about the moment they were about to share. Yes, there was so much he wanted to talk about with her, but it could wait.

He got down from the bed, and he felt a substance drop on the back of his hand. Despite being in a haste to meet up with Mia, he paused and glanced at the back of his hand.

Strangely, it was blood. Whose blood? He wondered as his other hand wiped at it and brought it up for proper inspection. It didn't have the scent of anyone he knew so he couldn't tell.

How did it then get to the back of his hand? He wondered, but there was no one to answer.

He was losing to his thoughts again, and he had to stop himself. His Luna, whom he had desired and longed to have in his arms for many weeks, was now naked in the bathroom, waiting for him to come in and take her. He couldn't let the thoughts stop him.

He grabbed his trousers, pulled them off, and tossed them to the floor. Having become naked, he hurried towards the bathroom, only to stop when he spotted something about himself as he passed in front of Mia's dressing mirror. He turned to the mirror, and his heart skipped a beat. There was a trail of blood on his nose. It was still fresh.

He couldn't pick up the scent earlier because it was his. It was his blood.

He had gotten bloody noses in the past; then he had gotten into fights with Edward or his other crazy friends, but this was different.

His face grew pale, and his palms became sweaty as he thought about what this could mean.

These signs reminded him of one thing: the shadow sickness.

The one that killed his mother.

    Chapter 2: Brokeness

    NOW

It wasn't the first time Mia had woken up without Xavier beside her. She had subconsciously gotten used to waking up without him beside her. Being used to it didn't remove the ache his absence brought her.

Something had happened. Something happened to him, and she didn't know what it was. He wasn't the same Xavier she knew, at least not in the last three months.

They slept beside each other, but she felt she was beside a stranger. She couldn't read his mind anymore, and in the seven years they had been true mates, that had never happened. She believed her inability to read him was her fault initially, but then she realised it wasn't. He had created a barrier in his mind to keep her out of it. It didn't make sense; why would he do that? What was he hiding from her?

She confronted him a week later, and he told her he had nothing to hide.

It was a lie; she didn't have to read him to know that. It was the first time in years that he had lied to her, and it hurt. What was he hiding, and why couldn't he tell her about it? They were mates, and that meant they were to share everything, yet this he had hidden from her.

With this secret came the bridge between them. At first, she still gave herself to him, but it soon became unbearable, and their moment together brought her nothing but pain.

She had cried seven weeks ago while they were united in lovemaking. He tried to console her, but she drew away and told him she needed the room.

He hadn't touched her since then, and though they stayed on the same bed, nothing happened. There had been times she desired him as one would a mate, but it wasn't worth the torture. She didn't chase him away; she told herself he would come out to her with the truth, but many months later, nothing changed, and every day that went by, her heart broke even more.

She pulled herself to sit down in bed, knowing the day had already begun and she didn't have the luxury of an excuse; she was the queen, and so she had duties to fulfil no matter how she felt.

She caught her hand roaming over the side of the bed where he slept, and his scent lingered. She longed for him despite everything, and she knew she would never stop. He was her mate, king, and the only one for her.

After getting ready, Sir Valerio was at her door to escort her to the maiden's court, where they held their monthly meeting.

If Valerio noticed anything about her aura, he said nothing about it. They arrived, and Mia saw herself into the court, where the other maidens waited for her. The meeting kicked off with many maidens coming up with their ways of contributing to the coming war, just like they had done in the last few months.

The elders in the council spoke and tasked the maidens with the roles they would have to play in the coming war, and a few of the maidens wanted to fight beside the men, which was welcomed and accepted.

Are you okay, my queen? Luna Elena asked as the meeting ended and the maidens took their leave. Mia would only leave once the maidens were out, so she had to wait.

She forced a smile and asked, How do you mean?

Luna Elena shook her head. Nothing; I just noticed you are not yourself, and this isn't the first time you have been this way. I noticed it a few months ago, but I didn't want to pry. My queen, I hope you are okay.

Her fake smile remained: Well, I am fine; I'm just exhausted. The war coming is great, and all we can think about is preparation.

True, my queen. Luna Elena bowed her head. Forgive me for intruding.

Mia wished she didn't have to pretend, but she had to. The people looked up to the King and Queen for hope in the face of the coming war. Telling them all wasn't well would only bring doubt, especially since she wasn't sure what was happening with the king herself.

It is fine; you only worried for the queen's safety; it is nothing to be sorry for.

Mia returned home, and a part of her wished she didn't have to. She wished there was somewhere else to go. Somewhere to hide, the thought of staying with Xavier, pretending everything was fine, didn't sit with her. He wouldn't tell her what was wrong, and she couldn't read him.

Mama! Lyon called and yanked his hand out of his uncle's grip. He took to his short heels, and Queen Mia waited for him with an excited look on his face.

    Lyon, hey! How are you?"

I'm fine; Uncle Ace came to visit. He said this and pointed back to Ace, who stood near them.

Queen Mia's eyes travelled to him, and they remained there. It's been many months since she last saw him. He had been behind the walls for close to a year now, and he had been in control of the fortification of the kingdom against the invasion of Foth. He knew Foth well, their mode of attack, and was, therefore, best suited for the task. His presence here now meant he had news about the work so far around the kingdom.

    Lord Ace, Mia acknowledged.

He walked towards her and bowed when he got to where she stood. It's so nice to see you again, my queen.

And you too, why are you back?

The King called to me, he answered.

    Why is that?

He stared at her as if expecting her to know the answer, and when her eyes remained blank, his narrowed. The king needed my knowledge of magic.

She didn't know this because the king didn't tell her anything, and she was in the dark as a commoner in Wahala.

    For what?

He charged me to tell no one, Ace answered, and his eyes showed remorse. I am sorry, my queen.

She wasn't just anyone; she was the queen, yet that was how she felt right now. She didn't know the first thing about the man she slept beside daily.

She forced a smile. You do not need to apologise for anything. I will speak to the king.

She set Lyon down on his feet and asked, Are you going anywhere soon?

He shook his head and said, No.

Can you hold on to him for a while, then?

Mia entered the palace and walked through the throne room and the hall, looking to find Xavier because she didn't know how much of this she could take.

She took the turn that led to the study only to see a fair blonde woman in a long white silk dress walk past the guard standing there, open the door, and step inside.

For a moment, Mia thought she saw a vision because she had never seen the woman, and there was no way she would have walked past the guards without being stopped.

Mia picked up her pace and came to stand before the guard. "I need to go in.:

I received strict instruction from the king to let no one in. He said, repeating almost the same line Lord Ace had used with her outside earlier.

The king cut her off on many things, and she wanted an explanation.

She wanted to know if they were on the same terms and ask why he left her in the dark. I am not just anyone; I am the queen, for goodness' sake. I need to get through.

The guard didn't look like he wanted to go against her wish, but he couldn't let her through. I am sorry, my queen, but the king gave an order. He doesn't want to be disturbed by anyone.

She didn't want to go against the King's order; no matter how hard it seemed, he had to have a genuine reason behind his actions. They had been together long enough to make her believe it. As for the fair, blonde lady in white, she was her imagination and not actual.

Mia turned to leave when she heard groaning coming from behind the door. She tried to ignore it, but it came again, this time with a grunt.

She couldn't leave; he was in pain.

She returned to the door and said, Stand aside, Luc. She commanded.

My queen- he began but didn't get to finish as Queen Mia shoved him out of her way and grabbed the knob of the study door and opened it. She didn't wait to be invited in; she stepped inside.

Her breath cut in her throat at what she saw.

Xavier sat on his chair, naked from the waist up, and the same blonde lady in white she had seen walk into the study moments ago stood in front of him with her hand on his neck and another buried below.

Mia became as still as the dead as she saw what was happening before her.

He wasn't in pain, as she foolishly thought he was. He was being pleasured by another and loving it.

Her eyes grew glassy, and a weak sob left her mouth, making Xavier's eyes snap open to find her. The blonde lady also pulled away to stare at her.

Xavier had a look of surprise on his face but not of remorse for being with another and breaking the vow they had made to each other.

    Chapter 3: The Fool's Duty

Mia's lips quivered, and her eyes blurred at the sight before her, but she held herself together. She couldn't give him the satisfaction of seeing her in tears. He didn't deserve to, not after what he had done. He had broken their vows to belong to each other alone and no one else.

She turned and walked away from the study as fast as her legs could.

She needed to escape to a private place where no one would see her. She needed to find a place where she wouldn't have to bother about being queen and looking the part. Go far away, hide, and cry because of her shattered heart.

She wanted to grieve her loss, and she wanted to be alone.

Xavier didn't come after her, and she was happy about that.

Her mind played back the grunts he made, and she remembered the blonde-haired woman's hands all over him as if he belonged to her. Her hand also had his most intimate member in her possession. She didn't need to see it to know it was there; how he responded said it all.

Why would he do this to her?

    Why?

What did she not give to him?

There was nothing left; she gave him everything. Her life, her love, her body still, that wasn't enough to keep him.

    What did she do wrong?

Once she shut their chamber door behind her, the tears poured in beyond her control. She wiped them away, but they kept pouring. She told herself he was going through a phase and blamed it all on the upcoming war. She believed he would soon come out of it, but from what she saw in there, she knew it wasn't a phase; it never was.

She was foolish not to see things the way they were sooner. He placed a barrier in his mind to keep her away from his disgusting thoughts. If he hadn't done that, she could have found out the truth sooner.

She couldn't hold in the pain, and she leaned heavily against the door, sliding down onto the floor and staying there.

She wanted to grieve for her broken heart and shattered promises. Knowing the truth didn't make her feel better; it made her feel worse and doubt herself.

What did the blonde woman give him that she couldn't?

There was no one here to answer the question.

He didn't come after her, which was fine because she didn't want to see his face. She couldn't control herself, what she would do to him, or what she wanted to do.

He hurt her in a way she never thought he would. It's been years since she's cried because of him. He had made it a duty to do what she wanted and what made her happy—well, until a few months ago. As much as she would like to deny it, she knew he had changed physically; she could see it but figured it had to do with the stress of preparing for war, but it wasn't.

    A fool she had been.

A slight knock came on the door, and she pulled herself to her feet and wiped at her teary face.

My queen, the voice of Rio, the guard who had stood before the study, called.

She calmed herself and found her voice to ask. What is it?

The king gave me words for you, my queen.

Whatever he had to say, she didn't want to hear it. Still, she had no choice here.

She wiped off the lingering tears on her face. Say it then.

I will need you to open the door, my queen, he said calmly.

She hesitated before opening the door. His eyes met hers, and he must have figured she had been crying because his eyes dropped in pity.

What do you have to say? She demanded, already wanting to close the door to his face and return to her grieving.

The king instructed that you move out of the royal chambers, he answered in a small voice.

Mia, at this moment, couldn't believe her ears. First, he brought a strange woman into their lives, and now he wanted to chase her out of the royal chambers, which was another form of disgrace.

Just when she thought he couldn't hurt her any further, he did.

Why was he doing this to her?

She bit down on her bottom lip, willing herself to shed no more tears. If he wanted her gone, she would do him a favour and leave. Yes, she loved him still, yet she couldn't ignore his disrespect for their disregard for their marital vows.

Okay, then I shall move out. She answered and stepped back to close the door but noticed Rio was not ready to take his leave just yet.

Her brows pulled together in a frown. Is there something else?

He nodded before adding, The king instructed me to assist your moving.

Wow, he wanted her gone that fast. It felt as if he couldn't wait to have his mistress in their room and on their bed.

She still couldn't believe what was happening to her.

Mia didn't realise she was crying until teardrops landed on the back of her hand. She turned away from Rio in an attempt to hide her face, then wiped the tears off.

She calmed herself and glanced around the room, her eyes noting everything. She had many of her things all over the room, yet her most essential items, her clothes, were in her bag.

If the king wanted her gone, she would leave the royal chamber; hell, she would even leave the palace to save them both from the torture of seeing each other.

I would like to leave, Mia said to Xavier, who was currently sitting and reading through the scholar's report on his desk. He had his robe fixed and the buttons adjusted.

He was done with his blonde whore, and she has left now.

He placed his feathered ink beside the report scroll and glanced at her. Leave to where?

His green eyes held so much intensity that it left her weak in the knee, but she focused on her reason for being there. To the Asika house.

    Why?

Because I do not want to be here, at least not yet.

You are queen; you are my wife, he argued.

Well, that isn't how it feels or seems, my king. She answered.

What will the people say when they learn that the queen has left the palace and returned to her father's house?

She couldn't believe his hypocrisy: I didn't know you cared so much about what people would say, considering what you have done.

You are queen; you are my wife.

She scoffed at his audacity at using those titles with her. You also threw your wife, the queen, out of the royal chambers. There is no greater disgrace a queen can face at the hands of her mate and king.

    You are mad at me.

I wish I could say I am mad, my king; I simply want to be granted these requests. I will only be gone a few weeks, and I will take our sons, she replied.

As much as she wanted to run away from Wahala with her sons, there was much to consider. A war was coming; nowhere was safe, and she had better chances of survival here than anywhere else. Besides, this was her kingdom, her land, and her home, and she didn't want to give it up to some whore. Not without a fight.

I cannot grant your request to leave. He replied in a voice so low that she almost didn't hear it. We might be king and queen, but we are still answerable to the people, and if it is not in the people's interest, then it's best not carried out.

Her teeth gritted at his words; his hypocrisy was showing, but not in a good way. She turned away from the study when she halted and turned to him. Please remind me of what purpose your mistress in white serves the kingdom.

His eyes narrowed at her, but he seemed to understand what she said and where she was headed with her line of question.

I do not understand. He spoke, his eyes narrowing.

I just want to know what contribution your blonde-haired whore brings to the kingdom outside of seduction.

He rose to his feet in anger. Calling her his whore had triggered him more than it should, considering that was what she was. "She is
