Cursed To Be My Mate - Kelly Starrz

Chapter 39: Dreaming of Goddesses (1)

    ~ Rhys ~

That night, Rhys passed out in the uncomfortable bed for the first time without struggling or tossing and turning restlessly from the lack of luxury and comfort Amira's lodgings provided. After a quick, horribly cold wash and a hot, tasteless meal in his stomach, Rhys returned to the room and collapsed on the bed, seeking comfort in his dreams. When could he return to his body and the palace?

It had been a great experience so far, but acting like the she-wolf was tiresome, and remaining alert and the constant vigilance to avoid mistakes had taken its toll. Now, Rhys succumbed to a state of oblivion, his thoughts dissipating as vibrant colours emerged, his thoughts fading as he recognised he was in a dream.

Rhys let out a weary sigh. All he desired was sleep, and if he were to dream, he wished to do so without awareness. He simply longed for his mind to find respite, to escape from dwelling on the predicament he was currently facing.

Scanning his surroundings, Rhys realised he was standing in front of a lake mirroring the mountains behind it. The stars were brighter than ever before, but the moon was missing. Though the surrounding trees were darkened shapes and silhouettes, they rustled with the gentle breeze. It was a pleasant sight, one he hadn't seen before and guessed this was his imagination, and the area was most likely where the vampires lived. Frostholm.

It was said their cold terrain was stunning, with crisp mornings and snowy peaked mountains always in view. Not that they could enjoy the sight during the day. They also could not feel the cold, so their region was perfect for them. The cold-blooded vampires.

Why would he dream of Frostholm, though? His thoughts hadn't turned to the vampires in a while; how could they? He did wonder how the kingdom was and if the vampires had attacked again. Who was running the kingdom if he was not there?

Rhys? A feminine voice called to him from the side. It was soft, sultry and one he'd heard too many times since becoming her.

Turning his head, his brows tugged together as he stared at the she-wolf he'd grown used to seeing in the mirror. Unlike his other dream, Rhys did not bother trying to converse with her. He had too much on his mind. Besides, this was only a dream. He was rather happy with being a man again, even if it was for a brief while.

Rude, she muttered, spinning a blade in her hand before squatting on the ground in front of the lake and staring at herself in the lake's reflection. Huh… It's nice to see myself again.

Rhys frowned at Amira's commentary. He started to gravitate towards her until a blinding light caused his eyes to squint and his steps to falter. Once the stark white light dimmed, Rhys lowered his arm from shielding his eyes and looked in the direction where it came from.

There, walking across the lake, was a woman of starlight silver hair and eyes with pearlescent, shimmering skin, her attire of a long white robe. Rhys' mouth dropped open as Amira tilted her head to the side and narrowed her gaze at the newcomer. This was a dream, so maybe he was going to have a threesome with-

I think it is about time I introduce myself and explain why you are here before Rhys gets any more ridiculous ideas… At the mention of his name, Amira looked between him and the woman of starlight. My name is Artemis.. You might be more used to my title-

You're the moon goddess, Amira interrupted gruffly. So… Goddess… what are you doing here? Is this dream real or a part of my imagination?

Rhys slowly moved his head to look at Amira. Your imagination? He then proceeded to look back at the woman, who indeed did look like a goddess. Where one was light and still walking on the surface of the water like it was nothing, the other goddess was dark and deadly, especially with the way she spun her dagger.

He admitted she was stunning, but a woman's looks weren't everything. Amira was the rebel group's leader and seemed to have a nasty temper towards him. She did try to kill him...

What, you think we are sharing a dream, dear Alpha King? She mocked.

    See!

Enough! Artemis stopped in front of them, and it was only then the pair realised she was twice the size of them. But in a single second, she popped into a condensed size of herself and stood in front of them like a regular human. I brought you both here.

We're sharing a dream… with the Moon Goddess? Rhys said in awe. He wasn't usually impressed by anything, but this was something rather miraculous.

I'm not here to have a drink and a chat, Artemis snapped and glowered at the pair of them as she placed her hands on her hips. Before you do anything else to try and ruin each other's lives, I thought I would intercept… I switched your souls from your bodies.

What?! Rhys and Amira shouted in outrage, then looked at each other in shock.

They were in each other's bodies. It wasn't one-sided.

Rhys realised the throne had not been empty, but the worst possible person was residing in his body and controlling the kingdom!

On the other hand, Amira was fuming about the situation. Rhys had been hanging out with her mates, her cousin, her stomach dropped- her uncle, and for the love of the Moon Goddess, who now pissed her off, how did he deal with crazy Caz? What has he discovered about their location? Their missions?

Why… Amira's fists bunched together as she brazenly glared at the Moon Goddess that could quite possibly strike her down right then in her sleep. Why did you do such a thing?

Rhys glared at Amira, then turned his glowering eyes to the Artemis.

Artemis snorted. Because I can. She walked around them and waved her hand as though they were nothing more than her toys. You rejected my gift. I knew in the stars it would be tough, but I never expected you to reject what so few have… How conceited.

Chapter 40: Dreaming of Goddesses (2)

Amira's mouth gaped at the Goddess' words and looked to Rhys, feeling a little lost. Are you saying… You switched our bodies because you're having a tantrum about us rejecting each other-

It is not a tantrum! Artemis shouted, and the sky erupted into a loud thunder, echoing as her eyes glowed in fury. You are mates, and you will learn why.

Are you forgetting the part where we tried to kill each other? Amira snapped, seeming to not care about her life or that she was brazenly speaking to the Moon Goddess.

Rhys arched an eyebrow at her, admiring her audaciousness. Perhaps he didn't mind this bit about the she-wolf, but Amira was correct. Mates are allowed to reject each other.. Otherwise, why would there be a clause allowing us to do so? Rhys asked, his tone neutral as he spoke to the Moon Goddess like one of his subjects he had to be respectful to. Which were not many.

It is there for other means. But you two… Artemis threw her hands up and sighed in exasperation. You are the only mates I have seen that have willingly rejected each other… And it is not allowed. Rhys Quintrell.. She narrowed her eyes at him. You already know what you've done wrong. You are the Alpha King. You do not get a choice in this matter. And Amira... do you not want to be a Luna to the kingdom?

No, Amira deadpanned, crossing her arms against her chest. She wasn't having any of this. She didn't care if the Moon Goddess was scolding them. Artemis was having a tantrum because they were the first to reject the mate bond. It's a rejection for good reason, really. I will never be Rhys' mate, and I do not want to rule a kingdom that shits on their own.

Rhys snarled at Amira's comment and took a step in her direction. I do not want a mate that sleeps around with a dozen guys!

Oh? Amira's eyes flashed in anger. Who the hell did this guy think he was? I'm sorry.. How many women do you fuck on a daily basis… Oh, wait… fuck, then kill.

Rhys lunged towards Amira, but she poofed out of existence and landed beside Artemis. Rhys whipped his head to look at her with a scowl. But Amira was also looking wide-eyed as though she didn't expect that to happen.

Stop it! Artemis hissed. Ugh. You two are so annoying… Here I was, minding my business, looking pretty for the night sky when you two rejected each other… This is all your fault… Now I have to babysit you because you can't last a few minutes talking to each other without trying to attack each other…

    That's why we shouldn't be-

Yes, I heard you the first time, child. You have no choice in this matter, though, Artemis interrupted Rhys. She sighed in exasperation again. I will leave you two with this before I get a headache listening to you… Know this…. Her voice turned serious as she looked between Amira and Rhys. There are consequences to what you do in each other's bodies. Amira… You tried to get rumours circulating the palace that the Alpha King is gay..

What?! Rhys roared, glaring at Amira, who smirked and stuck her tongue out at him.

Oh… And Rhys tried to cause issues with some pirates, which could have gone exponentially wrong..

What?! Amira growled. Seriously? Why would you do that? They could attack us-

So, you can be armed to attack the palace and take over more territories? Rhys snapped as the pair stormed towards each other. I don't think so.

Rhys and Amira glared at each other as they stood only inches apart. Amira tilted her head back, ignoring the strange crackling between them. She really did despise him. Amira scoffed, I see you have learnt nothing except for living without servants. Well, Your Majesty, enjoy living in the dirt!

She prodded his chest, but Rhys grabbed her fingers, tightened his hold on them and leaned towards her face, smirking. Oh, don't worry. I've enjoyed some part of this experience. His gaze travelled down her body hungrily. I will continue to do so.

Amira gasped, shocked at what he admitted. Her hand moved before she could stop herself and slapped him across the face. Pig!

Rhys growled and whipped his head back at her, grinning. Slut!

Their chests heaved with anger, their bodies close enough to almost be touching. This was a dream, but Amira could feel the heat radiating off Rhys, and she could feel her temper boiling her blood. She wanted to hope that he didn't touch her body in such a way, but this was the Alpha King who bedded different women all the time. Of course, he did.

Rage moved her hand again, but before she could connect her hand to his face, Rhys gripped her hand and smashed his lips against hers. Amira's eyes widened from the fluttering in her stomach that coiled in on itself from self-loathing and hatred towards Rhys. Um! Ugh! She growled and bit his bottom lip, tasting blood instantly.

Rhys pulled back and smirked, licking the blood from his bottom lip. Amira grinned back, uncaring for the blood on her lips and teeth.

Well, wouldn't you be fun to tame-

Please! You couldn't handle me. Don't ever try to kiss me again. Next time, I'll cut your balls off, Amira threatened.

Didn't you almost die the last time you tried to come near me? Good luck, sweetheart. Anyway... I can just enjoy your sweet body in my spare time now.

That's right! They were... in each other's bodies. Amira's eyes widened slightly at the obvious realisation. She could always cut his balls off while in his body... No, no.. that was self-harm and painful. At least there wouldn't be any mini-tyrants running around in the future, though...

Amira and Rhys locked eyes, exchanging glares that conveyed the peculiar mix of sensations between them. There was irritation and mutual disdain, their chests rising and falling in the aftermath of the kiss, their emotions in turmoil. Their taunting seemed to be the only normal thing about this whole ordeal.

Well, this is my queue to go. I told you what you needed to know. The rest is up to you! Enjoy! Artemis grinned before the dreamland turned a bright white, and the pair were thrust out of the joined dream.

    Chapter 41: Rumours (1)

    ~ Amira ~

As soon as she was thrust from the dream, sleep escaped Amira as she fluttered her eyes open. There it was, the luxury bedroom she was getting accustomed to. The elegant ceiling, free from any imperfections, displayed a pristine, unblemished coat of white paint. This was her current reality.

It was all so surreal, especially after that dream. Amira's hand went to her lips and then scoffed at the shimmering sensation on her lips. Lips that were not her own. She dropped her hand as a cloud of unease and anger settled over her.

Alpha King Rhys was currently in her body and was in the Wilds, most likely learning everything to do with the rebels' organisation. Sooner or later, Rhys was going to figure out where he was and where their traps were. Eventually, they were going to return to their bodies. Artemis didn't tell them they would, but it was evident they would return to their former selves at some point.

However, the Goddess didn't tell them much besides what each of them had caused the other. Amira couldn't believe the king was foolish enough to try and break a deal with pirates. Captain Hart might lust after her, but it would never be enough to stop him from blowing her brains out if she ever turned on him or did his crew dirty. What she did was some harmless fun, though she wanted to get back at Rhys after discovering his attempts to ruin everything.

Amira slowly sat up, resting her head against the headboard as she stared across the luxurious bedroom. Now was not the time to try and enact some petty revenge. She glanced at her groin beneath the sheets, then shuddered at the idea of dismembering the king. He might have been having fun in her body, but she wouldn't waste time with such lewd fantasies.

Heck, she didn't give a damn about sexual acts and had her fair share of fun, but she didn't know when they would return to their bodies. She should be taking advantage of this situation while she can. Of course, Rhys could reverse anything she tried to do in his name, but what else could she do?

Amira was torn between two desires: she wanted to reoccupy her body quickly to prevent Rhys from uncovering more about
