About this ebook

The Vagabond Kid and his faithful companion Javier Pelaez are riding along and just wandering when they hear a cry for help. The Vagabond Kid cannot resist the call to any adventure and investigates the source of the pleas. He and Javier come across a young boy, Chad Burke, lying on the road. Chad is quite despondent and desperate, as he narrates the reason for his despair.

Chad narrates how he and his little dog, Goli had been walking along the path, minding their own business. Chad and Goli had done this so many times before, but today would be different. Chad narrates how two gruff-looking men on a wagon pass him by. One of the men asks for directions while the other sneaks up behind Chad and kidnaps Goli. Chad is confused and even shocked at these men's behavior, but there's nothing he can do. He's only a little boy, and the men easily overpower Chad and take Goli.

The Vagabond Kid finds it strange that two adults would even bother to take a small dog from a defenseless boy. He decides to investigate and follows the wagon of the two men that had taken Goli. It's a fresh trail, and the Vagabond Kid easily catches up to the two dog kidnappers. He doesn't know it yet, but these two men and their other cohorts are after lost treasure, lost treasure that is somehow connected to Goli.

The Vagabond Kid and the Hidden Treasure - John J. Law

    Chapter One: The Kidnapping

It was just another bright and sunny morning for young Chad Burke. The sky was blue up above with not a single cloud in sight. There was a cool breeze that blew in the air, and it was perfect for a nice little stroll.

Chad took the opportunity to walk his dog, Goliath. Despite being named after a mythical giant, Goliath was anything, but large. He was a small, brown dog with short fur. Chad fondly called him ‘Goli’ for short, and although Goli was small in stature, he had a heart as large as his namesake.

Ain't it a fine day for a walk eh, Goli? Great morning with the sun up an' all!

Goli barked his approval and wagged his tail as he kept up with Chad. Both the little boy and his dog were grateful for every moment they spent together and for good reason. Goli had been through so much in his young life already, a lot more than most dogs would have been through.

Goli was a very colorful and unique dog, to say the least. He was a small dog with unnaturally long legs for his short stature. He also had a grating bark that sounded like broken glass. Goli was also not shy to bark at anyone he didn't know. Goli was never at ease, and this was perhaps because of what happened to him, in the past.

Chad could still remember when he, and his uncle Dave took Goli in as a little pup. He was not as active as he should have been and seemed pale and weak. The few moments Goli was active, he was often irrational and prone to erratic behavior, like chewing on the wooden table, or stumbling around their cabin. Goli also suffered from various epileptic seizures that made his early life quite unpleasant.

It all came to head when Chad and his mom found Goli lying face up on their cabin floor. The poor dog was frothing at the mouth and Chad could still remember how he cried and prayed to God that Goli would not die.

His mother diligently prepared some warm milk which she gave Goli and decided to change his diet. She began to serve him cooked food that was separate from theirs instead of the usual leftovers. Considering how they were poor settlers living out in the frontier by themselves, this was a genuine sacrifice for Chad and his mother, but the effort slowly began to pay off.

Goli's condition soon began to improve for the better. Slowly, he regained his strength and energy. Soon enough, he was jumping up and down their little cabin, like any good puppy should. The madness in his eyes that was brought about by his condition also improved, and he was aware of himself and his surroundings again. His epileptic seizures also stopped completely. Goli had been nursed back to health thanks to Chad and his
