About this ebook

The grizzly stared back at young Colter and gave a loud roar. Its roar echoed throughout the vast wilderness and the sound of the animal's fury made Colter's blood run cold. The young mountaineer had interrupted it from its grisly task of killing Fulton, but he wasn't sure if he had made it in time. Fulton was clearly in a bad way with blood pouring from his scalp, all over his face. And the young and inexperienced mountaineer had only his tomahawk to face down the nasty grizzly in front of him. It didn't look good for either man and Colter couldn't help but think about past events. His mind raced back to everything that brought him to this grim moment.

Mountain Man Steven Colter - The Bear Attack - John J. Law

    Chapter One: The Tomahawk

Young Steven Colter stood over his fellow trapper, Robert Fulton. Colter could not help but stare at Fulton who lay at his feet. Fulton was in a bad way. His head was bleeding profusely at the scalp. Colter could barely see Fulton’s features as they had been obscured by a mask of his crimson blood. He couldn’t help but stare at such a grisly sight. Even as he did so, he had to keep an eye on the large grizzly in front of him, as well.

The grizzly stared back at young Colter and gave a loud roar. Its roar echoed throughout the vast wilderness and the sound of the animal’s fury made Colter’s blood run cold. The young mountaineer had interrupted it from its grisly task of killing Fulton, but he wasn’t sure if he had made it in time. Fulton was clearly in a bad way with blood pouring from his scalp, all over his face. And the young and inexperienced mountaineer had only his tomahawk to face down the nasty grizzly in front of him. It didn’t look good for either man and Colter couldn’t help but think about past events. His mind raced back to everything that brought him to this grim moment.

Damn. How did I ever get myself into this? He said. As he spoke the words, he gripped his tomahawk even tighter. It was the only weapon that the young mountaineer had against the wild grizzly in front of him. The grizzly was clearly angry and could charge at any moment. Colter knew that the animal would most likely charge at some point. And when it did, he would only have the tomahawk to protect himself and Fulton, the leader of this trek. Colter’s mind raced back to the past, to another time when he held the tomahawk. A much different and more peaceful time when his life wasn’t on the line.

    Chapter Two: The Contest

Colter gripped the tomahawk in his hand as he headed towards the rendezvous camp. There was no danger at all at such an event. If anything, it was the height of a mountain man’s rugged and bleak existence. There was no danger at the rendezvous camp, but Colter still gripped his tomahawk in one hand. It was a nervous habit he had developed trekking out in the woods trapping beaver and hunting various game. The tomahawk itself was a gift from one of the friendlier tribes he had encountered in his wanderings for beaver fur. It had become something of a lucky charm for Steven Colter, the young but already grizzled mountain man.

The rendezvous camp was held in a wide and sprawling area on the plains. Such an area was perfect for such a grand event. When Colter approached the rendezvous camp, he was struck by the large scope of it all. There were several tents as far as the eye could see. There were several trappers and representatives of
