    A Moonlit Encounter

    Paton! Koll’s voice was sharp, tense.

    Sir? Paton took a dozen careful steps across the wet leaves. He rejoined the Royal Chief Guard in the moonlit clearing beside the king.

    Give me your sabre.

    Koll already held a flechette gun. Why would the smaller man want Paton’s weapon, customised as it was to his larger hand? But—

    That’s an order, Paton. Koll’s lip twitched beneath his limp blond moustache. You swore loyalty to the Crown, didn’t you?

    Paton had. In addition to the loyalty he’d pledged, he owed the Crown gratitude. King Frederick had sent the royal physician to ease his wife’s final days. And now the king had suffered the same grief.

    Shoulder-to-shoulder with Koll, the king peered at the surrounding trees. This is the right spot, isn’t it? His voice rasped like an old man’s.

    That’s what I gathered. Koll’s hand shook as he accepted Paton’s sabre.
