About this ebook
Miss Catherine Hooks is one of the best governesses in all of England; her employer, the Right Honorable Edward Glennon, is one of the busiest men. The fact that they’ve fallen in love is immaterial. Honorable people in their situation do not mention such things. But Edward’s son is on the verge of leaving for school, and when Cat asks for the only thing she can demand under the circumstances—a reference and help finding a new position—she discovers that even a right honorable gentleman has his limits…
A Right Honorable Gentleman is a short story of about 7,000 words long, and was previously available in the anthology “Premiere.”

Chapter One
London, 1863
It was long past midnight , and the windows of all the other houses on Grosvenor Square were dark. But Miss Catherine Hooks had no time for weariness. No matter how long her day had been, her most taxing chore lay ahead of her still.
In this house, the oil lamps lining the hall still burned merrily. Below, the last sounds of the day made their way up the stairwell: the brush of broom against floor, the sharp bark of the housekeeper giving orders, the clink of silver as the butler counted it back into the case.
But there was no slinking back to join her fellow servants. Cat fingered the paper in her hands and continued down the hall.
A door opened ahead. Cat’s breath caught—but it was Mrs. Walters, the cook, who stumbled out. Not him. Mrs. Walters’s face was fixed in a grim smile, a determined grit of teeth that she held long enough to pull the door shut behind her. As soon as she did, all hint of pleasantry slipped away. Her fingers touched her temples; her eyes, somewhat shielded by the graying curls that peeked out from under her white cap, shivered shut.
