One Good Deed Deserves Another - John J. Law
Chapter One: At the Hands of the Lawbreaker
Big Beaver Graham sat on the ground all tied up. The ropes were wrapped tightly around his person. There was no way he was wriggling out of this anytime soon. A figure approached him. The man was not as tall or as large as Big Beaver Graham was, but he wasn't on the ground, all tied up.
Big Beaver Graham was so named, because he was a large mountain man. He was exceptionally tall and with a large frame, but sitting where he was, he seemed small and helpless. There was nothing he could do as the man approached him.
Must feel kind of uncomfortable like, eh? A big trapper like yourself, trapped like this. I'm sorry Big Beaver. I didn't want to tie you up and such, but you left me no choice.
The man had several glints of light shining from his person. The rays of light made it seem like the man had holes in his body where the sunlight was shining through. The truth of the matter was though was something far less mundane. The young man had several brass badges tacked on his shirt. He was smiling from ear to ear and seemed mighty pleased with himself.
So, what's it like for the big mountain man to be all helpless an' tied up, eh? The big trapper, himself trapped. This must be something new for you, eh?
Big Beaver Graham couldn't help but see the irony of his situation. The young man in front of him was right. He had spent a lifetime hunting various animals in the wild. He had gained his moniker from the beavers that he trapped through the years, and his exceptionally large frame. Now that he himself was all tied up, he couldn't help but think of the animals he had hunted, especially the beavers. Perhaps this was what they felt when they fell into one of his traps. This sense of futility and helplessness. It was not a very pleasant feeling.
"I guess you were a lot better being a trapper than you are as a bounty hunter, eh? Oh, you managed to track me down all right. Tracked me down pretty easily too. I mean for a man of your skills, tracking down someone like myself must have been something of a cakewalk.
After all, you've tracked down bears, beavers, elk and any other manner of animal in all sorts of places. But I reckon none of them animals could ever set up a trap for you an' turn the tables!"
The young man was right. Big Bear Graham was starting to regret taking this job, and trying his hand at being a bounty hunter. He was after all, a mountain man, first and foremost. Tracking down animals and hunting them down for their furs and meat was his main skill. Taking down a person for a bounty was something different altogether. And this particular man was something of
