About this ebook

Shandunka, the Paiute warrior is a man torn between two worlds. A white man by birth, he was kidnapped by Paiute Indians at a young age, and raised as their own. Because of his white lineage, he had to always prove himself in his tribe, and never quite truly fit in. Raised as a Paiute, Shandunka never truly understood the ways of the white settlers and often found himself at odds with their ways and laws. He has become a man apart, a man of both worlds, but welcome in neither.

Chapter One - A Man Torn Between Two Worlds

It was a hot, summer day in 1862 when Moira Gilbert and her pressman Wes Hudson rode off. Wes drove the horse-pulled wagon they were on, and his eyes darted about. It was clear that Wes was not at ease.

I don't like this, Ma'am. Riding out like this delivering the papers is risky business. he said.

Wes knew what he was talking about. There were several bundles of papers that had been loaded on the wagon. Wes and Moira were to personally deliver what passed for the local newspaper in the area. This wasn't exactly sitting well with some wealthy and powerful people, but Moira Gilbert remained firm and steadfast. She was determined to make sure that the papers were delivered, no matter what.

I understand, Wes. I'm afraid too but we have to do this. That skunk John Martel didn't like it when the paper took a stand against slavery. Probably figured we might reach more people and change more minds. she said.

Martel definitely wasn't happy. He scared off all our delivery riders an' now we've got to be the ones to deliver the papers to the people! Hudson said.

Martel is a small man, afraid of the winds of change. There's a change blowing in the wind, Wes. People are starting to see that slavery ain't a good thing, and that sentiment is spreading like wildfire all over the country.

Moira's words were grim, but true. There was a change that was sweeping the country. Opposition to slavery was growing, and it would only be a matter of time before the entire country was swept up by that change.

"You're right about change spreading like wildfire, Ma'am. And that fire is threatening to engulf the whole nation. I fear there may be a
