Chapter Eight
The rumbling sound started deep under the sand and grew. Zero looked at Stride. Did you do that?
No.
What is it?
the woman on the sand demanded. Someone help me.
Zero gripped Stride’s arm. Whatever happens, at least we’re together, baby.
Stride gave him a strange look and pulled away. I’m not your baby.
Stride?
Zero searched his face. Shit. You don’t know me?
Of course I know you. You’re that slave my father bought off the auction block.
Stride brushed by him. Lady,
he said, I don’t mean to be disrespectful to the dead, but I’m going to have to borrow some clothes off your husband there.
She snorted. He wasn’t my husband.
Oh,
Stride said, then reached down and turned the man over.
You’re going to rob him?
She swatted at Stride as if he were a fly.
Stride paid no attention. He proceeded to take off the man’s pants. Only of his pants,
he finally answered as he put them on and grinned.
The woman kept complaining to Stride, who wasn’t paying too much attention.
We were right on Howland Island and we lost the signal. I told Noonan to bear right. We started losing gas. One moment we were flying at a thousand feet, next thing we were down.
She dropped to her knees, watching Stride trying on Noonan’s shoes. Does anyone know we are out here? Is there a search party on the way?
Her hopeful glance faltered. I feared not.
She slid over beside Zero, who sank down on the sand, totally discouraged.
I have a bad kidney infection. Not sure from what,
she said, but it hurts. It burns badly in the night.
She looked so defeated Zero felt awful for her. He couldn’t help Amelia Earhart any more than he could help himself.
He had brought them to this place, but it looked like they had just continued from where they left off. Stride still didn’t love him. Damn it, he’d had Stride’s love for so short a time. It wasn’t fair.
The rumbling began again and everything started to shake. Lost in misery, not sure how to take Stride anymore, Zero watched the ocean and land on each side of them begin to close in, forming a hard surface. Finding himself moving upwards, Zero finally realised they were no longer on a beach.
He found himself in the cockpit of a huge plane. Two mannequins dressed like pilots were sitting in the seats. When he leaned to examine them, he made a face. What the hell?
Both dummies had the animated faces of clowns.
Stride?
Zero called out.
Stride poked his head in the cockpit. We’re in trouble. We’re in a God-damned plane…and wait until you see the passengers.
"Wait until you take
