Colt Magnus - Outlaw In The Pardon - John J. Law
Chapter One: The Proposition
The outlaw Colt Magnus wandered into the small and sleepy town of Gainsville. It was located in the middle of nowhere and was not listed in many maps. Not many people knew a town like Gainsville even existed and this was good for Colt Magnus. Magnus was after all, a man on the run.
Looks like a good enough place for us to settle down for a bit eh, Trooper?
Trooper neighed in what seemed like a response to his owner. It was highly unlikely that the horse understood its rider, but perhaps this was the exception to even that rule of nature. Magnus had been riding Trooper for so long that they had formed a deep bond. It was definitely deeper than a lot of bonds that Magnus had developed with other people. There were times it seemed that man and beast were truly connected and were even of one spirit.
Yeah, I thought so too, boy. This town's sleepy and out of the way enough that we can probably get at least a good night's sleep here.
Magnus said.
He settled Trooper in the local livery stable and proceeded to the local saloon. Magnus was a wanted man but he had enough money to get himself and his steed some comforts.
He walked right through the saloon's revolving doors and towards the bartender who was behind the saloon bar.
Barkeep. Get me some of your local rotgut.
Magnus said.
The bartender nodded silently and prepared a bottle of whiskey for Magnus. He sat down and was just beginning to settle down when it happened.
Colson ‘Colt’ Magnus. You're coming with us.
A man stepped in front of Magnus. He spoke with authority and wasn't asking Magnus. He was ordering him. Magnus instantly recognized the man's uniform. It was the uniform of the Federal Army. Magnus took one look at the man, heard his words, and knew that this was not good.
Whoa. What did I do? I ain't done nuthin wrong.
Magnus said.
It was a lie and both men knew it. Or at least it was a little bit of a lie and the truth mixed into some kind of a statement. For while Magnus was a wanted man, he had not broken any Federal law. And even the reason he was a wanted man was not so cut and dry. Magnus was quite the complex individual who existed in the middle, a man who did not live his life in black and white, but in shades of gray.
Now, now, Magnus. Ain't gotta make this any more difficult than it has to be. Stand up already and come with us.
the uniformed man said.
Mister, I don't know who you are, and you ain't got no right to be ordering me around moving places where you want me to go. Even if you're in uniform an' all. I ain't going nowhere!
Magnus said.
"This is the last
