The Bounty Hunter and the Circus Performers - John J. Law
CHAPTER ONE
The Wheel of Death.
The ringmaster took a look all around him. The small tent was packed with paying customers and it made the people look a lot more than they seemed. That was fine for A.W. Beckett. As long as he packed the circus tent with people, that was fine with him.
Beckett took a look around and waved at the crowds. He smiled at them, revealing his rows of white, sparkling, and shiny teeth. Good dental work was hard to come by, and was considered something of a luxury in these times, and Beckett had no reservations about showing his pearly whites.
Pa always did reek of cheap whiskey and tobacco back in the day, an' his teeth suffered for it. Ah' swore I would always have better teeth than muh old man, an' I did it!
A.W. Proclaimed softly whispered his dental triumphs, and no one could hear him gloat. They were all too busy cheering and whistling for the next act to follow. A.W. knew when he had an audience eating out of the palm of his hand, and this was just one of those moments.
And for our next act, witness the derring-do, the amazing accuracy, and the magnificent marksmanship of Darla
the White Gun Templeton!
The crowd cheered, as an attractive blonde stepped into the center of the illuminated tent. She stood beside A.W. and basked in the crowd's adulation. The blonde wore a large cowboy hat with a long coat, that stretched to her ankles. The coat, her hat, and her shirt were all white, while her faded jeans were rusty brown. She smiled and waved at the crowd. The attractive lady cut an eye-grabbing figure with her cherubic face, and twin six-shooters strapped on her belt.
You won't believe that a lady so attractive could shoot with such deadly accuracy! Let's have a display of your amazing talents, shall we? Darla, if you please.
Darla nodded, keeping her smile pasted on her face.
Ready when you are A.W.
Well, you all know about the new sport that's taking the country by storm. The sport that was invented by one of our own fighting young men, Abner Doubleday. I'm talking of baseball of course!
The true origins of the sport were much more simple than what A.W. was talking about, but A.W. didn't need to elaborate on such matters. After all, this was a circus, not a history class. Even Doubleday himself never claimed to have anything to do with it, but the legend grew from word of mouth, and exaggeration. A.W. didn't mind of course. He always preferred legends over facts. Facts were direct and boring, just as life often was. Legends were something else. Legends could be molded and sculpted to suit someone like A.W.'s needs. It was something that could provide a brief respite from the harshness of life, while giving A.W the means to make a profit. Legends were
