DURING the 1980s I booked an old friend, his brother, cousin and their wives to hunt in Zambia for most species available. Chris Beardmore came along as the second PH.
We had been allocated a new area – West Zambezi, beyond the town of Mongu, between the Zambezi and the Kwando Rivers on the border of Angola. No one had hunted this area for a long time so I was hoping we would get good results. The area was mostly open flood plain with some patches of teak forest away from the rivers.
After a night in Lusaka, we set off early on the 400km trip but soon found that the road (tarred at some time in the past) was strewn with potholes and broken surfaces, and it took us nearly all day to get to Mongu.
