The Highly Sensitive Person - Valerie Marie

Chapter I - What is high sensitivity ?

    Major characteristics of high sensitivity

15 to 20% of the world's population would be diagnosed as highly sensitive, with an equal distribution between men and women. 70% of sensitive people would present an introverted nature and 30% an extroverted nature[2].

Elaine Aron, psychologist, explains in her book The highly sensitive person: How to thrive when the world overwhelms you that highly sensitive people show an intense activity of the right cerebral hemisphere, seat of intuition and emotions. They also show a more reactive immune and nervous system.

More recently, neurosciences have also shown that high sensitivity often coexists with high potentiality and multipotentiality factors. These people would therefore be wired differently at a neurological level and offered highly developed cognitive abilities.

According to Imi Lo, psychologist, high sensitivity shows five major characteristics[3]:

    -Emotional charge

    -Sense of perception

    -Empathy

    -Spirituality and rich inner world

    -Creative potential

Let's review each of these characteristics.

    Emotional charge

The emotional charge is the major characteristic of high sensitivity. Emotions, rich and varied, are experienced in an intense way.

High sensitive, I go from laughter to tears in less than five minutes and sometimes, I really think I’m bipolar. Alert to my environment and surroundings, my pleasant and unpleasant emotions are easily mixed and lead me to a form of permanent frustration. This is destabilizing, insecure and tiring at the same time. Sometimes I feel out of step, sometimes isolated, sometimes misunderstood.

The emotional intensity is always there and almost everything can create an emotion : a smell, a music, a word, a painting, a picture... It gives a very vibrant and passionate aspect to my personality.

I have the feeling that I am always 'too much': too sensitive, too emotional, too passionate, too naive, too trusting... For a long time, I did not know what to do with these 'too much', how to manage them, how to tame them... Some friends of mine sometimes considered me as unstable, unmanageable or immature.

    ––––––––

    Sense of perception

Without really being able to explain, the high sensitive person detects subtle things that emanate from his environment and his surroundings like intuitions, body sensations, inner voices or mental images.

The sensitive has a developed intuition and works as a visionary: he sees, thinks in global mode and connects things together, often with great accuracy. He is able to feel other’s emotions (empathy) but, sometimes, this is not appreciated because people may have the impression that the high sensitive doesn’t respect their intimacy.

From my side, if I feel that words and actions coming from a person are not aligned, I will have some difficulties to trust this person. I can't deal with irony and the ‘not-said’. I appreciate people who put their cards on the table...

This ability to clearly see things, this clear-sightedness can be disturbing. I like to say things and not wrap my words with honey because of social conventions. This is why, by default, anything that is conformist and traditional is sometimes difficult for me to live with because it can lead me into circumstances where my authenticity is not respected.

The perception of a high sensitive is also sensory. Their five senses are highly developed and they can quickly feel invaded from all sides.

Personally, my high perception makes me sensitive to:

    - sounds that are too loud (ambulance, shouts, phone ringtones...)

    - smells that are too strong (air pollution, perfume, sweat, car
