    Preface

Before I became a book author and a Massage Therapist, I

had always been interested in Cosmetology. After I

graduated from High School, I went to a few Cosmetology

Schools. The first school I went to I learned about doing hair.

As time passed, I realized that doing hair was not for me, and I didn’t have a gift or knack for it. So, then I went to another school and learned about doing nails as a Nail Technician. I learned how to do manicures, pedicures, and artificial nails.

Such as gels, acrylics, and nail silk wraps. Learning about nails was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed it. After I graduated from the school, I went and took my State Exam, passed, and then got a job as a Nail Technician.

Being a Nail Technician was not all that easy and was very different than what I was taught in school. Anyway, I did

discover that I did have a gift for doing hand and foot

massages with manicures and pedicures, to the point where

clients were almost falling asleep! One day, my Mother

came in and wanted a pedicure, and when it got time to do

her foot massage, she was amazed at how good I was and

    12 | P a g e

told me that maybe I should look into massage therapy. So, I took her advice, and the place I was working had a part-time Massage Therapist who would come in and do

    massages on some clients.

So, I approached the part-time Massage Therapist and asked her many questions about massage therapy. She could see I

was very interested in it. So she told me she was a teacher from the Atlanta School of Massage and invited me to go to an open house where I could check out the school. After

attending the open house, I realized this was my calling. So, I attended the school, graduated in 1996, got my National

Certification for Massage Therapy in 1997, became a

member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and

practiced massage therapy for twenty-one years. I have

worked in numerous places and have worked in several Day

Spas. During my career, I had the opportunity to work with Dikembe Matombo, who was a Professional Basketball

Player, the musical R&B group TLC, and Rosario Dawson, who starred in the movie, Josie and the Pussy Cats in 2001.

After I practiced massage therapy for twenty-one years, I decided to become a book author. I became a book author

six years ago; my husband and I moved and needed a new

entertainment center. So, we ordered one online, and the

delivery person left it outside our door in our apartment

complex. Afraid that someone would steal it, I tried to bring it in myself. In the process of moving it, it was so heavy that it fell, and I tried to lift it. Little did I know that this thing weighed 200-250 pounds! As a result, I ended up injuring

my back. Luckily, I found a Chiropractor who could help me heal my back. So, I continued practicing massage therapy.

But I wasn’t the same anymore. In fact, after that injury, I began to have bad left hip pain that would radiate down my left thigh to my left knee, which was very debilitating and made it very hard for me to work. I needed to use my whole body to work for massage therapy, including my back. So, I was forced to end my career as a Massage Therapist. I was

devastated. Then, I had an idea! I remember back in

Highschool, I loved to write! So, since I had twenty-one

    years of experience with massage therapy, I decided to write 14 | P a g e

about it. And that’s how my book, Heal Your Mind, Body, and Soul with Massage Therapy was created.

Chapter 1 - Introduction: What Is

    Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is one of the oldest healing methods, with the practice dating back to around 2000 B.C.

The practice of Massage Therapy refers to the application of pressure to the soft tissues of the body using different techniques, such as friction, kneading, and vibration. This pressure is applied to manipulate the soft body tissues, i.e.

(muscles, ligaments, tendons, connective tissue), thus

improving one's health and well- being.

There are many reasons to seek Massage Therapy. Some

of the most notable health benefits of massages include:

    • Reduced anxiety and stress

    • Pain relief

    • Improved strength of the immune system

    • Relaxation of muscles

    16 | P a g e

    • Enhanced mood

    • Improved heart health

    • Enhanced blood flow

    • Lower blood pressure

    • Reduced risk of depression

    • Improves athletic performances

    • Helps with injury recovery

According to the American Massage Therapy Association

(AMTA), Massage is a therapy that promotes complete and

total wellness and health of both the mind and the body.

According to an AMTA survey conducted in 2015, 88% of

participants viewed Massage as beneficial to overall health and wellness.

In modern times, Massage is no longer a mere luxury but the most widely used type of alternative medicine therapy in hospitals for mental health, pain management, stress

reduction, and general wellness. A lot of doctors are now prescribing Massage Therapy to their patients for pain and stress reduction. It used to be when a patient came in to see a doctor for pain and stress relief; doctors would prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants. However, many people reported a lot of side effects from the medications that would be uncomfortable or even dangerous! So, many doctors
