Introduction
I did not write this book to give you loads of rules to follow. I’ve seen too many people quit in life or lack the drive to succeed and it breaks my heart to see how many of you start off enthusiastic about pursuing your fitness goals, but later lose interest. Meanwhile, our chaotic world of instant gratification keeps telling us that everything in life is supposed to come easy or fall into our laps with little or no effort.
My intention in writing this book is to help you persevere. Many people set their fitness goals that are just too high and try to commit to more than they are ready for. Some lack support from family and friends, or simply don’t have the resources to realize their dreams.
Unfortunately, many of our bad habits eventually diminish all our achievements. The habits that we develop through our lives have a tremendous pull and effect on us. Often, it is very hard to learn new habits and see life from a completely different perspective if we are used to doing something a certain way.
If you decide to join the gym they will teach you how to exercise, use their equipment. But gyms don’t teach their members how to actually stay mentally strong to accomplish their fitness goals. Of course you can always hire a personal trainer, but what if you cannot afford one?
Many people think that their fitness goals require an end. Instead, these goals need to be viewed as lifestyle changes. It requires breaking some habits, restructuring thoughts, and sometimes even reconstructing your whole life.
Although it is difficult to achieve a goal, it’s even more difficult to maintain it. To find that strength and the power within you to not give up requires much more than just a few quick steps. We need to train our minds, just like we train our muscles. Before making any commitments in life, we need to feel strong enough to achieve them. We need to learn how to develop independence from outer sources, resist temptation, stay positive, and believe in our own power.
The number of fitness clubs in the world is continuously growing, and the number of members joining those clubs is growing too, but the sad part is that the number of overweight and obese people in the world is also growing. Obviously, something is wrong with this picture, and we definitely need to look for better ways to stop killing ourselves, because with the number of overweight people, the number of sick people and deaths grew too.
We have gyms everywhere now. We also have hundreds of weight loss clinics and programs advertised on TV, radio, or in the mail. But neither of these helps us to reduce the percentage of overweight people. It just keeps increasing.
With drastic technology development, physical labor is almost eliminated from our lives.
Is this good for us? It feels good, but what comes later? Millions of people get sick, lack self-esteem and communication skills, develop fears and nervousness, and live with suffering and pain. After all, we end up with heart attacks, strokes, depression, and mental illnesses.
Our bodies have muscles, and we need to use them. If we don’t, our muscles will get weak, and then we lose not only our appearance but also confidence in ourselves, and worst of all, we lose our health. Our muscles are our second heart, and they provide all the physiological processes in our body. All these processes deteriorate with time if we don’t get physically active.
Just several decades ago we only had gyms for bodybuilders and athletes. Regular people did not need them because life was so much more physical—walking, bicycling, climbing stairs, doing house duties, gardening, and much more. Will we ever go back to those times? I highly doubt it. We cannot reverse the progress, and gym business would not be doing so well if there was a chance. We don’t have much of a choice anymore how to get physically active except for dedicating a specific time for it. Our life is filled with duties that exclude physical effort except for only a few professions.
When we perform physical exercises, our muscles get strong and our bodies become fit. Our minds can also be trained to become stronger. With a strong mind, any goal is achievable, but if your mind is weak, chances are that you will quit every time. Year after year, you will be making all sorts of excuses for why you haven’t achieved your fitness goals.
