We have been one of the luckiest couples I’ve known.  Louisa and I were both fortunate enough to have attended the same university where we met and we both graduated with degrees that have given us the ability to move upward financially.  For me, this has meant becoming a lead accountant at a large firm in the city.  My wife is her company’s best IT network specialist.  Together, we have earned healthy salaries and we have invested heavily in the stock market to help build our retirement.  Sure, we’re only in our late twenties, but you can never start building your fortune too early.

It’s down a little, Louisa says to me as we sit quietly on the patio behind our house as the sun rises.  We have become accustomed to getting up early on Saturday mornings to spend some time together before we become busier later in the day with things we plan to do.  I love this time with her as we enjoy our coffee together.

I called Trey and he said that we should maintain our current posture, I reply.  You know that there are plenty of roller coaster rides in the stock market, baby.  Just relax and let the man do his job.

Louisa sighs.  I don’t know, Cal.  I have an uneasy feeling about this.  On the news, they’re saying that we could be heading toward a deep recession.  If that happens...

We need to ride it out, I say again as I turn to face my beautiful spouse.  The market isn’t as bad as some people are claiming, Louisa.  Trey is the expert on this and he’s seen this kind of thing over the years.

She sighs while smiling at me.  I know.  You’re right, of course.  We have so much money in the stock market that I can’t help but worry sometimes, though.

And this house, I tell her with a chuckle.  We’re six months into it, but it’s going to be an awesome investment, right?  If we stick to the plans we have made, we’ll be able to retire comfortably in about twenty years.

The house.  Louisa turns and looks at the large five-bedroom, four-bath home that we bought just a few months back.  It’s much larger than we really need, but it’s in a great neighborhood with nice neighbors.  We have a loan for a half-million dollars on this thing.

And it will be worth about four times that in a couple of decades, I promise.  This neighborhood is growing, baby.  All the wealthier people want to live here, and that’s probably going to continue to be the case for the next half-century.  You heard the realtor, right?

My wife rolls her eyes.  "Do you mean the guy who wanted us to buy this house?  Of course he would say that, Cal.  You would too if you had been the realtor or a salesman trying to make your commission off a half-million dollars."

True, I laugh.  But we have the report from the appraiser as well.  We paid ten percent less than it’s actually worth.  We had equity in this place before we even moved in.  There is a sense of pride inside me concerning our financial position at this time.  My wife and I have been working hard to move up in our respective positions, and so far everything has worked out for the two of us.  Our lives are in perfect alignment with our financial future at this moment and I don’t want to upset the cart by selling some of our stocks prematurely.

Louisa raises an eyebrow.  And you said that I could use some of that ten percent to do something about the decor inside, right?

I knew you wouldn’t forget about that.

She smiles.  How much?  Don’t lowball me, either, Cal.  Be reasonable.

My wife and I always discuss larger purchases and other expenditures of money before we do something that could possibly upset the other.  It was an agreement we made with each other very early on right after we married.  I think it’s a good thing, too, considering how many arguments in marriages begin because of something one person has bought before conferring with his or her spouse.

I shake my head and grin.  Would ten thousand dollars be enough?

Louisa smirks.  Fifteen would be better.

Geez, honey.
