I take a long, slow breath of the air outside as I walk out through the heavy iron door.  The assistant prison warden behind me pats me on the shoulder and says, I'm going to miss you, Liam, but I don’t want to see you back here.  He chuckles as I turn to shake the man’s hand.  At least he was somewhat friendly to me over the last five years.  His boss, the head warden, couldn’t care any less about the inmates housed inside.  I might have seen him once every year during the annual inspection by the state’s board of prisons.  Even so, it doesn’t matter to me now.  I’m free.

Have a good one, I say to Assistant Warden Craig Lewis before he nods his head and closes the door behind me.  I’m left standing on a large sidewalk just outside of the wall with little more than the things I had with me on the day that I was taken into custody.  The state has provided me with twenty dollars so that I can get a ride or a meal somewhere.  I don’t know how some prisoners without family or friends do it once they get out with just twenty bucks to their name.  Thankfully, I have my wife of more than ten years coming to pick me up.

A silver Nissan SUV pulls up beside the sidewalk after about five minutes of waiting.  I approach it while thinking that it must be someone else offering to give me a ride.  I’m surprised when the passenger’s window rolls down and I see Cherie sitting in the driver’s seat. 

Get in, she says with a smile as she unlocks the door.  I reach out to the door handle and open the door so that I can step inside. 

After having a seat, I say to her, I can’t believe that I can finally kiss you!  Leaning over, I lock lips with the woman of my dreams.  Cherie and I met just after college years ago and married within months.  We had more than five wonderful years together before things came crashing down for the two of us.  Of course, that’s pretty much my fault.  Five years in state prison for a felony charge of insider trading hasn’t been an easy time for me.  I’m just thankful that the federal judge allowed me to be incarcerated at the state prison instead so that I could be closer to my family. 

I’ve missed you, sweetheart, Cherie says to me with tears in her eyes.  My lovely wife, petite and beautiful, has brown hair and blue eyes.  She doesn’t appear to have aged a day since the last time I saw her outside of the prison’s walls.  Sure, my wife has come to see me twice every month over the years, but it’s not the same when you are required to sit on the other side of a sheet of plexiglas from your significant other.  Those convicted of misdemeanors are allowed to physically mingle with visitors to the prison.  Felons are not. 

I feel like I’m meeting you again for the first time, I tell her as my body quivers.  Damn, I’m so nervous.  I reach over to Cherie and just put my hand on her lap.  My breathing is hard and I feel my heart racing as I finally get to be with her once again.  I’ve dreamed of this for so long.

Me too, Liam, she answers while keeping her eyes on the road.  We’ll get you home and give you something good to eat.  I’m going to make you your favorite dish.

My favorite dish?

Spaghetti and meatballs, baby.  I know you haven’t been getting that inside the prison.

I smile widely.  I love your spaghetti and meatballs, Cherie.  The crap they serve in the prison is probably from a can.  It’s disgusting.  I’ve lost a little weight since going in five years ago.  Though it’s not necessarily a bad thing (I had a few pounds I could do without), it wasn’t because I was trying to be healthier.  It was because the food there took some getting used to.  Even bland baby food would have been a better meal option than some of the things they serve inside the prison.  The commissary became my friend as I learned to buy ramen noodles and candy bars
