Marriage sometimes has a way of exploding right before your very eyes. I’ve been lucky. Darnel and I have celebrated ten years of wedded bliss as a bi-racial couple. It hasn’t always been easy. He has a circle of friends that were angry. He married a blond-headed white woman while I had friends I married a black man.

To me, skin is just a color. I look at the heart and he’s a sweetie. No doubt about it, we hit it off from day one. We met in our sophomore year of college and remained friends for three years. We married just after we graduated, after dating for only six months. They said it wouldn’t last because we had too much stacked against us.

Three years ago, Darnel received a promotion to be made manager of the local home security system business in town. It was a big deal and finally; he used his business degree in the manner he desired.

Me? I’m an interior designer at Hello Home, a big high-end furniture store. I’ve been with them for five years now.

We’re both thirty-two years old, and very settled in our riverside condo. We spend our free time traveling and enjoying outdoor sports like skiing and deep-sea fishing.

Comfortable. That’s a good way to describe our life together. We’re comfortable.

Our condo overlooks the river, which lazily flows in a big curve around the small hills. On days when it pours, the area fills in and it becomes a wide, raging river. We’re high enough if it ever flooded here, the whole world would be dead.

Hey, baby, Darnel says as he comes in from his morning jog.

I thought you went for a run. What’s on the agenda today?

He rubs the towel over his neck and sits back, taking deep breaths. I have an out-of-town business meeting at the end of the week. Need to shop for that.

Then we hit Arbor’s. The giant mall department store is the place we purchase most of our clothing. Though I thought his underwear collection was okay.

Darnel’s looks make women turn their heads, watching as he strolls through the corridor. Yeah, he’s mine, hands off, bitches. I lace my hand through his arm to let them know. He works out, carries a mass of muscles and his boyish face to boot. My brown sweetheart turns heads. They are jealous of what I, a blonde, pale white woman, have.

Hungry? We walk toward the food court.
